Zac Efron and an Oscar winner in the Vietnam War: German trailer for "The Greatest Beer Run Ever"

In “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” we write the year 1967: John Donahue (Zac Efron), whom everyone just calls “Chickie”, is an honorably discharged ex-Marine soldier in New York City. Every night he hangs out with the families of his neighborhood buddies at a bar run by an idiosyncratic guy named The Colonel (Bill Murray).

Their conversations are mostly about the absent young men who are either fighting in Vietnam or have died there. Since public opinion in the USA was turning more and more against the war at this point, the relatives considered how they could show their boys that there were still people at home who thought of them and were grateful for their commitment .

Chickie contemplates going to the front lines and delivering a few messages from loved ones to his friends in person, and sharing a beer with them at the same time. Everyone thinks his idea is crazy, but Chickie is still determined the next morning. Accompanied by war correspondent Arthur Coates (Russell Crowe), he, the letters and a pile of beer cans actually make it on board a plane bound for the war zone…

The film will celebrate its world premiere in mid-September 2022 at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival. Only a little later, namely already on September 30, 2022, “The Greatest Beer Run Ever” starts worldwide and exclusively on the Apple TV+ streaming service.

It may sound unbelievable, but The Greatest Beer Run Ever was real. The crazy but true story was filmed by Peter Farrelly (director of “Green Book” and “There’s Something About Mary”). Farrelly also wrote the script, which is based on the non-fiction book of the same name by Joanna Molloy and John “Chickie” Donohue.

Anyone who wants to while away the time waiting until the streaming starts by reading the book template will find what they are looking for at online retailers such as Amazon. The title is available there – but only in English – as a paperback, hardback, Kindle version and audio book:

When production began in 2019, Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien and Viggo Mortensen were initially cast in the lead roles. However, due to scheduling conflicts with other shootings, the parts had to be recast. Which is why ex-teen idol Zac Efron (“Greatest Showman”, “Bad Neighbors”) and “Gladiator” Oscar winner Russell Crowe stood in front of Farrelly’s camera.

Supporting parts include comedy legend Bill Murray (“Ghostbusters”), Will Ropp (“Out Of Play”), Kyle Allen (“The In Between’), Archie Renaux (‘Shadow And Bone’) and Ruby Ashbourne Serkis from ‘The Letter for the King’.
