Disney + subscribers can now discover the first episodes of Y, the Last Man, a post-apocalyptic series that follows Yorrick, the sole survivor of a mysterious pandemic. What is it worth?
What is it about ?
A mysterious epidemic has wiped out the entire male population of Earth! Anything but a young man named Yorick Brown and his monkey, Ampersand. Chased by groups of women with diverse interests, Yorick and Esperluette set off on the devastated roads of the United States, under the protection of the mysterious and deadly Agent 355.
Who is it with?
Actor Ben Schnetzer was chosen to play Yorick, the only man to have survived a planetary pandemic. You’ve probably seen him already in The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair in 2018 where he’s investigating the murder of a young girl. He was also chosen by Xavier Dolan in My Life with John F. Donovan to play the adult version of Jacob Tremblay. Here he gives the answer to the brilliant Diane Lane who plays her Commander in Chief, to Olivia Thirlby who plays her sister or to Marin Ireland (Homeland). Y the Last Man is also the opportunity to discover the promising Ashley Romans in the role of Agent 355.
It deserves a look?
Let it be said: the films and series that deal with the global pandemic – as mysterious as it is – we would have done well without. When FX officially won the rights to it, behind-the-scenes creative bickering led to the departure of the two showrunners – thus delaying the project. It is therefore almost 5 years after the announcement of the series that we can discover the first episodes, thanks to Disney + which offers them exclusively in France.
Let’s start by saying it: if you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic series, Y: The Last Man is definitely for you. She takes the time in the first episode to introduce the characters: Yorrick, immature and unbearable pseudo-magician, her sister Hero who hides a heavy secret, their mother senator, a mysterious agent whose interests are vague …
In short, there are many forces involved. And even if we know the dire fate that awaits the other male characters, the first episode does not put them aside.
Showrunner Eliza Clark (The Killing) made a point of directing the pilot, in order to set the tone she wants: the atmosphere is dark and the first post-pandemic scenes are rather convincing. It remains to be seen whether the quality will go the distance. With five seasons planned by the creator, Y: the last man should not fall into the trap of many other series by playing the card of suspense and cliffhangers …
