The rumor roars regularly, without a happy conclusion. Is Microsoft really thinking of bringing one of its most successful online experiences back from the Xbox 360 era? An always well-informed journalist thinks he knows it is.
According to Venture Beat reporter James Grubb, a new 1 to 100 is in active development. The adaptation of the famous American game show broadcast in the 2000s was offered on Xbox 360. Thousands of players then found themselves online for various cultural quizzes, where speed was rewarded. The confrontation between the only candidate and the other participants made it possible to win real gifts (Microsoft points, games …). A real great moment of happiness, very easy to access and unifying. This one will have animated a few evenings between 2009 and 2010 before dying out. And never come back. Surely for questions of rights, but also, perhaps, of a not very important advertising presence (ah, the Diesel spot with Common!).
1 against 100% safe?
In the video above, Grubb claims 1 to 100 is coming back, definitely. It would be in the hands of Altspace VR studio, Microsoft’s Mixed Reality department. This revival would employ the new avatars of Microsoft Teams.
2 years ago, the big boss of Xbox Phil Spencer was asked about 1 against 100. He had not hidden the thought.
We should do this again. The problem with 1 Against 100 in particular is that it is a TV show whose rights are held by a TV production company. But I can say that Matt and I have had a lot of discussions about this before, whether it’s this license or just its concept, and it’s something we’d love to do again. We look for ideas and talk to the teams because it’s one of those experiences that – and it’s almost a cliché – was ahead of its time.
The idea of having live events where more than a hundred people meet, with prizes to be won, is very community-oriented … With Mixer? You can even do it there without the need for the game locally. Anyway, Matt and I have been thinking about these ideas for a long time. I suspect you’ll see something happen, because I think it has to happen.
Has the time finally come for yours truly to be the machine he was back then? As always, we will take Grubb’s statements with a grain of salt. But, between us, in this age of estrangement, that would be fantastic. Simply.
