International streaming service Start has announced that it is developing a mini-series adaptation of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s classic novel “Crime and Punishment.” Vladimir Mirzoyev (“Russian Death”, “Her Name Was Candle” The eight-part drama series created and directed by ) will follow the book’s protagonist, Rodion Raskolnikov, as well as his sister Dunya.
Like the book, the series follows a desperate and indebted Rodion who is swayed by a dark force to commit petty thefts at a supermarket. Tormented by his conscience, Rodion is driven to kill an old woman, causing crippling guilt and paranoia. Although the novel is set in 19th century Russia, the serial version provides “a new perspective on one of the most philosophically important works of Russian literature of all time,” according to the press release. It takes place in Petersburg.
Daria Bondarenko, Start’s VP of Sales and Acquisitions, said: “We love to play with new styles and genre tropes, and we’re excited to breathe new life into this iconic piece and bring it into modern times. What would these characters look like now? What influences their choices? And finally, with the incomprehensible logic of crime, can an ordinary St. Petersburg student be forced to the dark side by the demons inside him? Or a stronger feeling?” said.
This new adaptation of the novel will bring new perspectives and interpretations to a classic story. This will be the story not only of Rodion Raskolnikov but also of his sister Dunya. They both look alike and have similar characters. In the series, Vasily Grigolyunas will serve as the cinematographer and is expected to be on the air later this year.
