A personality as discreet as an actor of immense talent, William Hurt died on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at the age of 71. Favorite of director Lawrence Kasdan, present in very great filmmakers, he built a rich and varied filmography and had made himself very popular with his recurring role of General Thaddeus Ross in the MCU.

This is all the more sad news that it is sudden. 71-year-old American actor William Hurt has died. It was known since 2018 that he suffered from prostate cancer that had spread to the bones. It was his son who made the terrible announcement, as reported Deadline.
It is with great sadness that the Hurt family mourns the passing of William Hurt, beloved father and Oscar winner for Best Actor, on March 13, 2022, a week before his 72nd birthday. He died peacefully, surrounded by his family, of natural causes. The family asks that their privacy be respected.
Born March 20, 1950, and trained at the prestigious Juilliard School, on whose benches he rubbed shoulders with Christopher Reeve and Robin Williams, William Hurt began on the stage before obtaining his first film role in 1980 in Beyond reality. From this first film, he was named to the Golden Globe for Best Male Newcomer. He will never leave the big screen and will experience a prosperous decade.
After two performances for Lawrence Kasdan (body fever and Friends first), it shines in Gorky Park of Michael Apted, but especially connects three films which are worth to him a nomination with Oscar for Best Actor: Spider Woman’s Kiss by Hector Babenco (1985), The Children of Silence by Randa Haines (1986) and Broadcast News (1987) by James L. Brooks. For Kiss of the Spider Woman, he win the Palme for male interpretation at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985 as well as the Oscar in 1986.

William Hurt will make other films with Lawrence Kasdan and will appear in great filmmakers like Woody Allen in Alice in 1990, Wim Wenders in Till the end of the world Anthony Minghella for Mr. Wonderful. In 1992 he was in Plaguewhere he shares the bill with Sandrine Bonnaire. They start a relationship in 1997and has a daughter, Jeanne, born in 1994.
We see it shine in the register of science fiction, with DarkCity by Alex Proyas, lost in space by Stephen Hopkins, and AI Artificial Intelligence by Steven Spielberg in 2001. Fluent in French it rotates in Closer to paradise by Tonie Marshall in 2002, and in 2012 in I’m angry at his absence by Sandrine Bonnaire.
In the meantime, he will have gone to M. Night Shyamalan (The Village), at David Cronenberg for A History of Violence- which earned him in 2006 Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor -, in Robert De Niro and Sean Penn, in Reasons of State and Into The Wild. Without forgetting, his first appearance in the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in The Incredible Hulk in 2008.
This role in the MCU, he will take it back four more times in Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Black Widow. His penultimate film, before appearing one last time at the cinema in The King’s Daughter.
