The slap of Will Smith during the Oscars made a lot of talk about her. Many comedians from the Hollywood world reacted to this historic slap. Jim Carrey notably stepped up to the plate against the star of “The Williams Method”.
A historic slap
This 94th Academy Award has already caused a lot of ink to flow. It must be said that the slap of Will Smith to the attention of Chris Rock, live on television, has something historic.
A few minutes after, Will Smith received the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the film The Williams Method. He then continues with a touching speech, where he apologizes in half. Later, the comedian made a public apology to Chris Rock and the Academy of Oscars. Since then, many Hollywood artists have taken sides and have given their opinions on this unprecedented altercation.
Jim Carrey picks his side
This is for example the case of Jim Carrey. In full promotion of sonic 2, the comedian returned to the slippage of Will Smith during the Oscars. The actor notably criticized the public who gave Will Smith a standing ovation when he went on stage to receive his award. He believes that the Academy, like the public, should have strongly condemned the action of Will Smith. Here is Jim Carrey’s statement at the microphone of CBS :
I was sick. I was sickened by the ovation from the audience. Hollywood is just asleep and it really does feel like that’s a very clear indication of our current state: we’re clearly not cool at all anymore.
Jim Carrey went on to say that Will Smith shouldn’t even have received this award. He drives the point home by saying that the Academy of Oscars should have escorted him out of the Ceremony. He then went on to say that he understands why Chris Rock didn’t press charges, to avoid further hassle. But instead, he reportedly sued Will Smith:
I would have announced in the morning that I was suing Will for $200 million. Because this video will be there forever, it will be ubiquitous. This insult will last a very long time. If you want to shout from the public and show your disapproval or say something on Twitter, no problem. But you’re not allowed to go on stage and punch someone in the face for making jokes.
Will Smith has since apologized, and notably left this message to justify his action:
Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally. I would like to publicly apologize to you and Chris. I was out of place and I was wrong. I’m embarrassed and my actions weren’t indicative of the man I want to be.
Will Smith is currently at the center of an Academy investigation that may take action against him. The actor could in particular lose his Oscar and be boycotted from future editions.
