Will the Razzie Awards, which “award” the worst movies and performances of the year, take back the award after the famous star’s aphasia diagnosis?
The Razzie (Golden Raspberry) Awards, which “award” the worst films and performances of the year, opened a special category for Bruce Willis this year. It is being discussed whether the award will be taken back after the famous star’s diagnosis of aphasia. While the Razzie founders have previously acknowledged that some awards are undeserved in the face of extenuating circumstances, it’s not yet clear whether that bounty will include Bruce Willis.
Last week, Bruce Willis received the Golden Raspberry Award for his performance in the space action game Cosmic Sin. The star had no rivals in the category in which he competed because a special competition category was opened only for Bruce Willis. The star’s performances in American Siege, Apex, Cosmic Sin, Deadlock, Fortress, Midnight in the Switchgrass, Out of Death, and Survive the Game were nominated in the “Worst Bruce Willis Feature in a 2021 Feature Film” category.
Fans are expected to withdraw the award from the Razzie Awards and honor Bruce Willis after Willis’ family revealed that the star has been diagnosed with aphasia, which causes loss of mental functions such as speaking and understanding speech.
On the Razzie front, a clear statement on this issue has not been made yet. Speaking to IndieWire, the organizers said they are still debating how to respond to Bruce Willis’ illness. Razzie organizers expressed their condolences for Willis’ plight in a tweet they released on Wednesday, but also said that “perhaps that explains why he wants to blow up in 2021”.
The Razzie Awards have been criticized for their malicious approach for years, but the organizers say the whole thing is a joke, aiming to highlight the lousy work from normally well-known talents.
