Not only in the real world but also in the world of “Avatar’ some time has passed, which can be seen from the fact that the main characters in ‘Avatar 2” have three Na’vi children – as well as a human son. How can that be and what is behind it?
The “Avatar 2” trailer features mostly spectacular imagery of the Na’vi and their homeland of Pandora, but upon closer inspection, it’s also packed with interesting details. So you can already see from the trailer how the “Avatar” deceased villain Quaritch (Stephen Lang) can be there again – and we see that Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s (Zoe Saldana) family also includes a human (!) child.
The explanation for this has nothing to do with the basic premise that humans like Jake are cloned into Na’vi-like Avatar-Body hatch, or with the resulting peculiarities in reproduction, but is much simpler:
Miles Socorro aka Spider, the name of the human child, was born to two humans on a military base on Pandora and adopted by Jake and Neytiri. Spider (played by Jack Champion) was left on the alien moon because he was too young to make the years-long interstellar journey home to Earth.
We remember: At the end of “Avatar’ the Na’vi and their human companions were able to defeat the evil corporation RDA and its soldiers and banished the humans from Pandora. The spider was then probably left behind.
Family dynamics with potential for conflict
The trailer reveals that Spider and his Na’vi siblings Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss) seem to get along very well and explore (and get into trouble) the jungles, beaches, and seas of Pandora together.
But Spider and his human origins also harbor a certain potential for conflict as “Avatar”- and “Avatar 2” producer Jon Landau pointed out a while ago: “Jake has [Spider] included, but Neytiri sees him as one of those who destroyed her homeland and killed her father. So there’s this family dynamic developing.”
Anyway, family is the central theme this time, says Landau. “We take Jake and Neytiri and build around them the most universal of themes, family. Jake is from the human world, Neytiri from the Na’vi world. They’re like a modern, ethnically mixed couple raising children who may feel like they don’t belong in one world or the other.”
“Avatar 2: The Way Of Water“ will be released in German cinemas on December 14, 2022. In the magazine Empire to whom Landau revealed these details about the Jack Champion figure, you can also check out another picture of Spider.
