who dies in"Stranger Things" Season 4, Part 2? Our predictions for the Netflix season finale
Netflix

July 1, 2022 will start the missing two episodes of “Stranger ThingsSeason 4, also referred to as Part 2 of Season 4. While part 1 is just about to break one Netflix record after the other, the expectations for the big XXL season finale are of course high (the last episode of the season is over 2.5 hours long!). However, if showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer have their way, fans shouldn’t just be excited about the finale: “They should be worried going into the final two episodes — for everyone,” they said in an article by TVLine.

And yes, after that statement we are concerned. Above all, the “about everyone” should of course mean: “It can happen to anyone, even long-time fan favorites.” But is that really the case? We’ve gone through the full main cast of the Netflix series and give our prediction of who will and won’t die.

Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) & Will (Noah Schnapp) survive. The four (alongside Eleven) have been the absolute core of the series since season 1, around which everything revolves. In the meantime, some secondary characters have outstripped him in terms of relevance to the plot, but we can hardly imagine that the makers would tear one of the guys out of the series life so suddenly. Other than that, it doesn’t seem like it, so in season 4 the Duffers would have a lot to do with the original quartet. A death would be too sudden and not well prepared as of now.

Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) survives. She is simply the figurehead par excellence of “Stranger Things’ and will certainly not be sacrificed by the Duffers just yet. However, it is quite possible that she will be caught in the final season 5. For Season 4, however, we believe their survival is assured.

Max (Sadie Sink) stays alive. Max was as close to death as any of the main characters in Season 4 and that’s why she’s going to survive. If she were to die, it would destroy the now legendary moment between her, Vecna and the Kate Bush song “Running Up The Hill.”

Steve (Joe Keery) dies. To wrap up Season 4 with a big emotional punch for fans, we’re expecting at least one really important character to kick the bucket – and nobody’s a better choice than Steve. Because he is dead for the series of greater value than alive. In Season 4, his character doesn’t get much expansion, instead repeating what we’ve seen in previous seasons: flirting with Nancy and squabbling with Dustin and Robin. There’s not much more to tell about Steve.

However, a heroic death would round out Steve’s story arc appropriately. Precisely because his love for Nancy is reviving, but it wouldn’t allow for any new developments if they got back together (we’ve already seen that).

For us in greatest danger: Jo2 Keery as Steve (here with “Robin” Maya Hawke and “Dustin” Gaten Matarazzo).

His death, on the other hand, would have a serious impact on several important main characters, primarily Nancy, Dustin and Robin. There is a lot of narrative potential here. Also, Steve was bitten by a bat monster. Who knows, maybe he really has caught some kind of upside-down rabies and is already doomed to die. And then there’s the conversation with Eddie, where Steve learns that Dustin adores him. That works, so Steve should at least learn the truth if he’s about to die.

Steve was also originally supposed to die in Season 1, the Duffers revealed on Netflix Geeked Week, but then they changed their mind and made him part of the main clique. Now the time seems ripe to put the original plan into action.

Robin (Maya Hawke) survives. First of all, Robin should survive so she can mourn Steve. But even if Steve doesn’t die: The Duffers are unlikely to drop the only queer main character from their ensemble and, apart from that, she hasn’t been granted any happiness in love so far. Letting her die would surely infuriate a lot of fans.

Nancy (Natalia Dyer) survives. Her story also has a lot of potential due to a possible death of Steve. Her relationship problems with Jonathan are far from resolved and it doesn’t seem as if Nancy’s death will solve this part of the story. So for us, Nancy is relatively safe.

Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) and Arglye (Eduardo Franco) survive. Jonathan was just too unimportant in season 4 to get another big moment now. His death wouldn’t have much of an emotional impact. Argyle, on the other hand, is nothing more than a comic relief. Letting him die would just be cruel and wouldn’t add much to the show.

Eddie (Joseph Quinn) will probably stay alive. We’re a little unsure about Eddie. Finally, in conversation with Steve, he mentioned that he was a scaredy-cat and that Steve, in contrast, was impressively brave. So it’s entirely conceivable that Eddie could sacrifice himself to prove his heroism. It may even be he who will save Steve from death. However, we think it’s more likely that Steve will die and Eddie will be the new “Steve” in Dustin’s life.

Hopper (David Harbour) survives. Season 4 has already pretended he died. So we’ve already had our “Hopper is dead” moment. To repeat that just one series finale later would be very strange.

Joyne (Winona Ryder) survives. She’s just the center of the adult cast of “Stranger Things“. It would also be unbearably nasty to Hopper, who has had to cope with so many misfortunes in his life.

Dmitri aka Enzo (Tom Wlaschiha) dies. Next to Steve, Dmitri is our most likely death row inmate. He will not be needed for future seasons and is therefore expendable. He and Hopper even talked explicitly about what would happen if he died: His son would be ashamed of him for being a traitor. But things might look different if he killed the Demogorgon, who is still raging around in prison.

who dies in"Stranger Things" Season 4, Part 2? Our predictions for the Netflix season finale

The German actor Tom Wlaschiha may only be there for one season as Dmitri (here alongside “Hopper” David Harbour).

Our tip: Dmitri blows himself up with the Demogorgon (the critter is vulnerable to fire after all) and thus allows Hopper, Joyce and Murray to escape. To honor him, Hopper contacts Dmitri’s son and tells him that he killed the monster. That would be a nice round end for the Russian new signing.

Murray (Brett Gelman) survives. He really got a lot to do in Season 4, grew beyond himself and you wonder what’s going to happen to him in Season 5. On the other hand, we don’t think two of the Russia group will get hit at once and Dmitri’s death is just a lot more likely.

dr Brenner (Matthew Modine) dies. After all the cruel experiments he performed on children, he deserved death. Eleven now has her powers back and he is no longer needed. Colonel Jack Sullivan, who is on the hunt for the child prodigy, has tortured himself into information about her whereabouts. It is quite possible that he storms the facility where Eleven is staying with his military. Here Brenner could die and perhaps even make a final act of reparation by sacrificing himself for the young woman. Jack Sullivan could die as well, but we don’t count him in the main cast.

dr Owens (Paul Reiser) survives. It would be conceivable that he would also die in a possible attack on the NINA research facility. However, we already have enough more likely death row inmates. We think he survives, possibly because Eleven saves him and he is then allowed to return to his family.

We are done with our assessment of the chances of survival of the individual “Stranger Things”-Characters. So our assessment is: Steve, Dmitri and Dr. Burners will die.
