Series creators Patrick McKay and JD Payne explained why we haven’t seen Sauron yet.

As the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s mega-budget “The Rings of Power” draws to a close, the most important question on fans’ minds is whether we’ll see Sauron in the first season. The threat posed by Sauron’s name and presence in Middle-earth is constantly on the agenda, but we have never seen him except for a brief flashback sequence in the first episode.
In an interview with THR, show creators Patrick McKay and JD Payne stated that they wanted viewers to understand the troubles and struggles of Middle-earth before showing Sauron.
“It would be very tempting to make the first season of this series the villain-centered The Sauron Show. But we wanted this level of evil and its complexity to emerge in a world you believe in,” McKay said, adding that they aim to make audiences fall in love with Middle-earth again. We wanted you to understand and relate to each of these characters and their struggles before we tested them in a way they weren’t tested.”
Theories that many of the characters we have seen so far in the series may be Sauron also keep the fans busy. Payne’s statements show they hope these speculations will emerge: “Another Tolkien incident, when a shadow spreads – which is part of what’s going on on our show – affects everyone’s relationships. Even Frodo and Sam. They’re best friends all over Middle-earth. , but with a manifestation of this shadow, they began to distrust each other. So the audience’s suspicion that this or that person could be Sauron draws them to that thing that the shadow overcame us all, causing us to doubt each other.”
In the sixth episode of the series, which aired last Friday, we witnessed the birth of a very important moment for Sauron, Middle-earth and the Rings of Power. At the end of the war in the Southern Lands, a volcano erupted as Adar had planned. With the eruption of what may have been the famous Mount Doom, the process that turned the South into Mordor began, but the first season of “Rings of Power” is only two episodes away. It is eagerly awaited that these two episodes will show how much of the events will take place and at what point they will leave the series.
