The fourth day of the Ayvalık International Film Festival, organized by the Seyir Association, came to an end with its full program!



On the fourth day of Ayvalık Film FestivalEarwig, based on the book by the internationally selected sculptor, poet and novelist Brian Catling, met with the audience. The film presents a fascinating tale of long-kept secrets and reawakened memories from the mysterious and imaginary world of Lucile Hadžihalilović. Earwig, who was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 2021 San Sebastian Film Festival, invites the audience from the opening credits to a kind of trance, dream, nightmare or follow a light of hypnosis.
Andreas Dresen’s award-winning film Rabiye Cunning Against George W. Bush was also screened for free at the Old Farmer’s Market. The film follows the case of Murat Kurnaz, who was captured 20 years ago in Pakistan and held in the Guantanamo concentration camp, through his mother Rabiye’s struggle to save her son. Meltem Kaptan, the leading actress of the film, which tells this story in a way that is far from dramatic and with a high comedy dose, won the Best Lead Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival, while the film was awarded the Best Screenplay and Art Cinemas Association Award.

The documentary is about two seasons in which seasonal worker children from different parts of Turkey work in an all-inclusive hotel. In the interview that took place after the screening, director Volkan Üce said, “I show the All Inclusive hotel as the modern world. When innocent children enter the world, I wanted to tell you how quickly the world corrupts them and how it corrupts them. That’s why All Inclusive has been a very nice microcosm for me.”

On the fourth day of the festival in the documentary selectionLove, Mark and Death, Cem Kaya’s third documentary film, which was screened in the Panorama section of the Berlinale this year and was awarded the Audience Award, was screened. The documentary presents the story of the independent musical culture of those who immigrated from Turkey to Germany after the 1961 Turkey-Germany Labor Agreement, and their children and grandchildren. Kino 2022 Project Coordinator Engin Ertan made a presentation before the film, which was screened as part of the Goethe collaboration.



During the festival, Çilingir Sofrası and Ela and Hilmi and Ali, which are popular domestic productions of the last period, were watched with interest. After the screening of Çilingir Sofrası, which brought together two high school friends who had not met for many years at a raki table, asking the question “How would the lives and stories in a geography without free and toxic masculinity change?”, director Ali Kemal Güven, producer Seda Özkaraca, editor Selda Taşkın, four days ago in Adana Ahmet Rıfat Şungar and Barış Gönenen, who shared the Best Actor award at the Golden Boll Film Festival, answered the questions of the audience.

Producer Seda Karaca shared the information that they shot the movie in five days and five nights. Barış Gönenen about the shooting process of the movie said, “We didn’t rehearse at all. In particular, Ali Kemal asked us not to come together. Because, after not seeing each other for 17 years, he sought that feeling of meeting each other,” he conveyed to moviegoers. Both actors said that their theatrical background was the source of the energy they captured in this film and that they worked with a small crew and shot a love story in which the whole crew worked with the same emotion.
For the first time this year with the contributions of Mey|Diageo “A New Director” Ziya Demirel’s first feature film, starring Ece Yüksel, Serkan Keskin and Denizhan Akbaba. Ela and Hilmi and Ali was also shown. The film tells a dark, provocative and darkly humorous story in pursuit of Ela, Hilmi and Ali, from different ages and worlds, living in the same apartment building. After the screening of the movie, director Ziya Demirel, screenwriter Nazlı Elif Durlu, actors Denizhan Akbaba, Ece Yüksel and editor Selda Taşkın answered the questions of the audience.
