Slasher, boogeyman, Scream Queen … If there is one cinema that has its own language, it is fantastico-horrific cinema. Small lexicon to see more clearly.
What is a Sequel? A Prequel? A Spin-Off? A Slasher? For the more informed and other aficionados, the answer seems obvious. Even, the question does not even arise in the end. But for the uninitiated, it is useful to do a little lexicon-style inventory!
The “Sequel”, Kesako?
Sequel is an English word meaning “suite”. Logical, therefore, that it is used to designate the continuation of a feature film. The fantastic cinema having a continuation in the ideas, the sequel is therefore one of the terms most used of the genre. Note that the word sequel has mainly been used in the language of fantasy cinema since the term prequel (see elsewhere) has been used to refer to a film featuring a previous chronological action. Of course, a sequel is not only the second part of a saga, but can be a number 3 or a number 4, and therefore the sequel of the previous film …
The examples of sequels in fantasy cinema are particularly numerous. We will mention, among many others, X-Men 2, Superman III, Batman, the challenge, Saw 5 or even Gremlins 2, the new generation. Note a particularly strange case: The Descent 2, which can be described as a sequel … of the American version of The Descent, in which the heroine managed to survive. The European public will see this sequel, and the return of the actress, with an amused look, since the heroine passed away in the version of the Old Continent.

A Prequel, késako?
A prequel is a film made after a given film, but whose action takes place chronologically before that of it. The prequel, in fantasy cinema, often aims to return to the origins of a character, of a myth. This term is used in opposition to the word sequel, which moreover has been used more and more since the prequels have surfaced in fantasy cinema.
Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans, Underworld prequel; The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, prequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre; or Red Dragon, prequel to the Silence of the Lambs … Also note the existence (beware, it’s already more technical!) of what we can qualify as a prelogy, a trilogy whose action is chronologically prior to that of an initial trilogy. A good example is the Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace trilogy / Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones / Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the first trilogy of the Star Wars saga (out of three trilogies , so nine films in total), produced after the initial trilogy composed of episodes 4, 5 and 6, but whose action is therefore chronologically earlier. It’s clear ? 😉 Finally, last subtlety with the direct-to-video The Scorpion King – Legendary Warrior, prequel to the Scorpion King which was already a spin-off / prequel. (Yes, it’s getting complicated there!)

A Remake, Kesako?
Term particularly used in the fantastic cinema, but which is absolutely not confined to this genre, a remake designates, it is its general definition, a film adapted from a given film already existing (and which could be more or less faithful to its model) “that we want to introduce to the new generation of spectators”. In its more unofficial definition, it is a film made … When a studio has no more ideas!
In fantasy cinema, we can no longer count the remakes. These include The Planet of the Apes, remake of The Planet of the Apes, The Eye, remake of The Eye, Terror on the Line, remake of Terror on the Line, King Kong, remake of King Kong, The Army of the Dead, remake of Zombie, or La Colline has eyes, remake of La Colline has eyes.
Oh yes, so that everyone can find their way around, a remake often uses the exact title of the original film! Finally, we will note the existence of a more specific case, “the continuation of the remake”, such as Halloween 2 by Rob Zombie, which has nothing to do with the original Halloween 2.

A Reboot, Kesako?
Nothing to do with the shoes used to walk in the snow, Reboot is a rather young term which one could translate, for its cinematographic use, by “dusting”, “revival” or “new departure” … It is used for define a film independent of the films of a saga, but whose vocation is …
