After the success of the first two films, comedian Woody Harrelson would very much like to return for a third “Welcome to Zombieland”. Unfortunately, no project is currently planned …
Welcome to Zombieland : a well-deserved popular success
In 2009, the filmmaker Ruben Fleischer embarks on the production of a horror comedy destined to become cult: Welcome to Zombieland. Parody of the zombie film, the feature film brings together an impressive cast, which notably gave its strength to the project: Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. Welcome to Zombieland met with impressive popular success, until it became a cult film for an entire generation. On the box office side, the work brought in more than $ 102 million in revenue for a budget of $ 23.6 million. A financial success that should have resulted in the launch of a sequel.
However, Sony Pictures waited ten long years to start production of Back to Zombieland. Released in 2019, the feature film is still directed by Ruben Fleischer, while the entire cast is also at the rendezvous. Unfortunately, this sequel receives less positive feedback. At the box office, the feature film grossed roughly the same amount with over $ 122 million in revenue for a budget of $ 42 million.
Soon a third opus?
However, currently, Sony did not give the green light for a Zombieland 3. What to disappoint Woody Harrelson who seems very motivated to return to the skin of Tallahassee. Indeed, the actor was recently interviewed on Screen Rant when promoting Venom: Let There be Carnage. He was also questioned for a possible Zombieland 3. But for the moment, there is nothing officially in preparation. Despite that, Woody Harrelson has made no secret of his desire to return to the Zombie franchise:
I haven’t heard anything about it from the team. But I would love to do it because I love these people. They are a singularly wonderful, funny and incredibly funny group of individuals. So what I’m saying is I’m open to it.
In addition, the spectators would surely be there for a third lap. Surely Sony is thinking about it, but between the COVID-19 pandemic, and the somewhat timid box office scores of the first two games, the project is currently not up to date! While waiting for a possible third film, for those who want even more Zombieland, there is always the video game:
