Universal Studios has just formalized the launch of a sequel to “47 Ronin”, the blockbuster worn by Keanu Reeves released in 2013. A sequel which should apparently be done without the main actor of the first opus.
47 Ronin : an almost 100% Asian shoot
In 2013, director Carl Rinsch directs 47 Ronin for Universal Studios. If the film’s headliner is Keanu Reeves, the rest of the cast is made up of 100% of actors of Asian origin with in particular Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano or Kô Shibasaki. The aim was to pay homage to the superb legend of the 47 Ronins. Unfortunately, the feature film received mixed reviews and crashed at the box office. Indeed, for a budget of $ 175 million, the film only grossed $ 151 million. A hell of a failure which explained the lack of continuation. Yet almost ten years later Universal Studios has decided to produce a second film.
To the cast of “47 Ronin 2“
Indeed, Universal formalized the production of a “47 Ronin 2“. At the moment, not much is known about the project, other than the start of the casting (revealed via Comingsoon). Mark Dacascos (John wick 3), Teresa Ting (Orange Is the New Black), Mike Moh (Once upon a time in hollywood), Dustin Nguyen (Little fish), Yoshi Sudarso (Buffalo boys) and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians) are also announced. The feature film will be written by John Swetnam, who will be supported by the duo Aimee Garcia and Aj Mendez.
A suite in modern times
Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Universal Entertainment did not hide his enthusiasm for this project, specifying that it will take place this time. in modern times :
We are excited to continue the story of these ancient Japanese samurai warriors with this next chapter in the 47 Ronin film franchise set in modern times. This all-new production showcases some of today’s most talented international stars. We believe fans around the world will be delighted with director Ron Yuan’s vision.
This sequel is already in production in Budapest edited by Ron Yuan. This former comedian, who has notably appeared in films like The White House fall, Independance Day: Resurgence Where Fast and Furious 4, recently went behind the camera. He notably directed the short film Three bullets and musical comedy Step up year of the dance.
The plot of 47 Ronin 2 will therefore take place in the modern world where the different samurai clans continued to exist in great secrecy for several centuries. This sequel, expected in 2022, will normally be released only in streaming. As for Keanu Reeves, no statement has been made regarding his possible return, but this is unlikely.
