Gavin O’Connor’s film “Warrior”, starring Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, will soon be spin-off as a series. The filmmaker has just revealed the first elements of the project.
Warrior : a punch film
In 2011, the filmmaker Gavin O’Connor may be making the best movie of his career: Warrior. Worn by Joel Edgerton, Tom Hardy, Frank Grillo and Nick Nolte, the feature film tells how two broken brothers, each in their own way, find themselves in the ring during an MMA tournament. The years have not improved their relationship, and the two brothers will settle their problems with the fists. At the arrival, there is $ 1 million to be won, enough to save their own families.
Warrior turned out to be a critical success. Nick Nolte was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Yet on the box office side, the work turned out to be a failure for the Lionsgate studio. Indeed, for a budget of 25 million dollars, Warrior only brought in 23 million. Which explains why there was ultimately never a sequel.
The film will soon be serialized
Filmmaker Gavin O’Connor himself has confirmed that his film Warrior was going to be adapted as a series. It’s been a while now that the director has been trying to bring his characters back to the forefront by offering a Warrior 2. But the studios never gave their consent … After ten years of struggle, Gavin O’Connor seems to have won his case. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the release of Warrior, Gavin O’Connor spoke with Discussing Movie, in particular on the legacy of his work.
During this interview, the director then confirmed that a series centered on the universe of Warrior was currently in development. He made a deal with Lionsgate to write, produce and direct all the episodes of the show. The series is tentatively titled Warriors, and will focus on characters other than the two brothers in the film.
The series will tell the fate of four new fighters, two men and two women, who will all participate in the next version of Sparta. Gavin O’Connor obviously promises that the series will retain the tone and spirit of the film, by telling the reasons which push his characters to fight. O’Connor also revealed a few leads regarding his characters. One of the fighters is expected to be held at Mountjoy, a women’s prison in Dublin. The other female protagonist is expected to be a Muslim and lesbian fighter who lives in Paris.
As for the two male characters, one of them should logically be called Bobby Watkins, and should live in Houston and fight to lift his family out of poverty. Apparently, UFC fighter Daniel Cormier would have been chosen to play this character. As for the last protagonist, no information has yet been shared.
Now we just have to wait for more news about Warriors. Lionsgate also needs to find a streaming service or channel that agrees to broadcast the show. But with the recent success of fighting series, like Cobra Kai, this shouldn’t be a problem. To be continued !
