When Denzel Washington shot “The Equalizer”, the 67-year-old was already in his late 50s and thus in the best age for a later career as an action star: Liam Neeson, now 69 years old, ultimately only switched to a lone fighter in his mid-50s and hasn’t stopped beating up bad men in front of the movie camera ever since. The mostly unarmed hand-to-hand fights from “The Equalizer” are among the showpieces of the tough vigilante rip-off, which will run unabridged on VOX on October 6th from 10:55 p.m. B. can be borrowed digitally from Amazon (it is also currently included in the WOW subscription).

The action stars of contemporary cinema are often older men, and perhaps their appeal lies in the fact that they go to work with an experience that younger colleagues like Chris Hemsworth or, more recently, Alan Ritchson in the new “Reacher“ series just can’t offer yet. In any case, our 3-star review of “The Equalizer” highlights the charisma and deadly precision Denzel Washington has as Robert McCall as the strengths of this otherwise lengthy revenge-snare.
This is what The Equalizer, loosely based on the 80’s TV series of the same name, is all about: Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) lives a perfectly timed routine that takes him to the same diner every night. There he regularly talks to the young prostitute Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz) and it is therefore immediately apparent to him when she is not there one evening. Robert McCall goes on a search and soon has to deal with the Russian mafia – and one can only feel sorry for its members, as Robert is a former professional killer who still knows his craft well…
The sequel “The Equalizer 2” was released in 2018, but Denzel Washington doesn’t want to stop there. In January 2022, the two-time Oscar-winning actor confirmed he would be returning as Robert McCall. So The Equalizer 3 is coming and Antoine Fuqua, who directed the first two films, will be directing again.
