In addition to “Terminator”, “Titanic” and “Avatar’ James Cameron has yet another masterpiece to show: The sci-fi adventure ‘Abyss’, which airs this Sunday on Tele 5. If you haven’t seen the film yet, you should definitely do so.

James Cameron has proven time and time again that he is a great director. Whether “Aliens – The Return” “Terminator 2″, Titanic” or “Avatar“: They are all rightly considered classics and have been able to raise the contemporary state of the art to a new level.
The sci-fi adventure is always neglected “Abyss – Abyss of Death”, which can be seen today, May 15th at 8:15 p.m. on Tele 5. Here James Cameron was not only far ahead of his time in terms of special effects, but also established his passion for the underwater world, to which he would devote himself again and again from there.
That’s what “Abyss – Abyss of Death” is about
After colliding with an unknown object, the American nuclear submarine USS Montana sinks to the seabed. The army is then forced to send a team of four specially trained Navy Seals on a rescue mission. Time is of the essence as enemy submarines are en route to the scene of the accident.
Led by Lieutenant Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn), the team and engineer Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) embark on an undersea drilling platform that will serve as the base for the mission. However, there are not only conflicts with Brigman’s ex-husband (Ed Harris), who runs the platform. A hurricane is also brewing as the unknown object reappears…
In the official DashFUN review, “Abyss” was able to earn an excellent 4.5 out of 5 stars. In conclusion, it says: “James Cameron presents a large-scale project that is typical of him. A fantastic story, enormous technical effort, and a coherent emotional core lift the work far above the genre average.”
“Abyss” is not a dull blockbuster, but cinema with depth
While James Cameron has always excelled at the spectacle, and Abyss is no different in some respects, don’t hope for non-stop action here: “Powerful explosions should not be expected, instead the viewer is offered an exciting journey into the land of illusions.”
Also remarkable is “the balance between breathtakingly intense moments of tension and the precise depiction of interpersonal relationships.” With “Abyss” James Cameron succeeds in exactly what he has always excelled at: “Perfect mainstream cinema with brains that provides the best entertainment is in no way inferior to other films by the director and has aged surprisingly well.”
