Jeff Bridges is drenched in blood in the first trailer for the upcoming FX drama series “The Old Man,” which will premiere June 16. Based on Thomas Perry’s 2017 thriller novel of the same name, “The Old Man” stars Bridges as Dan Chase, a former CIA agent who spent decades off the grid hiding from his old life. When an assassination attempt forces him to come out of hiding, Chase flees from the FBI’s deputy director of counterintelligence, Harold Harper (John Lithgow), with whom he shares a complex past. To escape capture and survive, Chase must confront his past life’s faults and mistakes.
In addition to Bridges and Lithgow, Alia Shawkat as Harold’s bodyguard Angela Adams in “The Old Man,” and CIA special agent Raymond Waters EJ Gbenga Akinnagbe stars as Bonilla and special ops contractor Julian, all trying to track down Chase. Amy Brenneman also stars as Zoe McDonald, an ordinary woman who is dragged into the situation and becomes an unlikely ally after hosting Chase one night.
The trailer sees Bridges and the rest of the crew in intense action sequences as Chase escapes and encounters CIA agents who want him captured. The show was developed for television and written by Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine, who previously created the Starz series “Black Sails.” Two executives produce the show, along with Bridges, Warren Littlefield, Dan Shotz, David Schiff and Jon Watts. Watts also directs the first two episodes of the series. “The Old Man” is produced by 20th Television in association with The Littlefield Company.
The series has repeatedly faced delays throughout its production. First announced in 2019, the series was originally scheduled to premiere in 2020. In March, midway through filming for the season, the show stopped production due to the Covid pandemic. After resuming filming in the fall of 2020, Bridges was diagnosed with leukemia and production was halted while she was undergoing treatment. A year later, Bridges’ cancer was in remission, and the show resumed filming this February and ended before winter was over. The first two episodes of “The Old Man” will premiere on June 16. The entire seven-episode season will run until July 21.
