Marvel Studios released the first trailer for the Disney Plus series “Moon Knight” on Monday night, officially launching the 2022 roster for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In “Moon Knight,” which will premiere on March 30, Oscar Isaac stars as Marc Spector, a veteran and a deep case of dissociative identity disorder who emerge as completely different individuals. He is under the influence of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, which further raises Marc’s anxiety about his mental illness.
In the trailer featuring Kid Cudi’s “Day ‘n’ Night,” Marc can’t tell the difference between his normal life and his dreams. He plays with a Rubik’s cube, can’t sleep, just jumps in panic with his feet chained to his bed, and pretends to forget that it was he himself that caught him the night before. After visiting a museum in Ancient Egypt, he sees a vision of Khonshu and later meets the villain of Ethan Hawke, a cult leader who encourages Marc to embrace the darkness within himself.
The trailer ends with a shot of Marc dressing up in a Moon Knight costume and brutally beating someone on the bathroom floor. Unlike all of Marvel Studios’ previous Disney Plus franchises based on existing characters from the company’s pre-2019 feature films, Moon Knight charts a whole new path with an all-new set of characters and a featureless storyline. Published by Marvel comics in 1975, Moon Knight originally had superpowers based on the phases of the moon, but more recent iterations have modified his abilities with the help of sophisticated gadgets. This made comic book fans compare the character to Batman.
“Moon Knight” also stars Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy. Jeremy Slater (“The Umbrella Academy”) and Mohamed Diab (“Eshtebak (Clash)”) serve as creator and lead writer with the team of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (“Synchronic”). The show marks the second year that Marvel Studios offers TV series for Disney Plus alongside feature films.
