Since its release in theaters last May, “Top Gun : Maverick” crushes everything about its passage to the box office. A blockbuster which could have been a legend of Formula 1.
Top Gun maverick : the film of records
When the project of a sequel to Top Gun was revived in 2014 (Tony Scott already wanted it, but his suicide in 2012 threw everything into question), skepticism struck many moviegoers. In effect, Top Gun is an 80s classic. And in recent years, Hollywood hasn’t been the shrewdest in resurrecting cult films to make sequels.
On arrival, however, Top Gun : Maverick is a complete success. Artistically first, the film is worth thanks to powerful aerial sequences and the charisma of Tom Cruise. Commercially then since since its release, the film has not stopped earning dollars, currently standing at 1.3 billion dollars in revenue collected worldwide. Above all, the film directed by Joseph Kosinski begins little by little to titillate mastodons deemed unbeatable so far. So after Avengersthe blockbuster managed to sink Titanic on American soil this weekend with 662 million in profits against 659 million for James Cameron’s classic.
Will he now try to go for other blockbusters such asAvatar Where Avengers :Endgame ? Wait and see.
A role reluctantly refused
Top Gun : Maverick could have counted on guest star luxury. And not just any since it is racing driver Lewis Hamilton. The British world champion is indeed very close to Tom Cruise. And like he is a huge fan of the first parthe then immediately offered his services to the American actor, as he said in an interview with Vanity Fair :
When I heard they were doing a #2, I was like, ‘Oh, my God! I have to ask him.'” (…) Regardless of the role, I would have slipped in even as an extra, to play a sweeper in the background.
As Tom Cruise likes to please his friends, he immediately accepted by offering to play one of the young fighter pilots supervised by Maverick in person. A role which, on paper, was made for Hamilton as it would have recalled his taste for speed. Unfortunately, the race schedule obliges, the sportsman had to decline the offer, to his great regret :
Calling Tom Cruise and Joseph Kosinski to tell them the bad news was the most depressing phone call of my life.
However, Lewis Hamilton and Joseph Kosinski will have the opportunity to work together on a film set in the world of Formula 1. The star will indeed be a producer and also an advisor. Planned on Apple, it will give Hamilton the opportunity to work with another cinema legend: Brad Pitt, who is planned in the film. Waiting for an appearance in a Top Gun 3 ?
