Memorable secondary role in “Top Gun”, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky’s teammate Ron “Slider” Kerner, does not appear in his sequel”Top Gun : Maverick”. His interpreter, Rick Rossovich, gave explanations on this subject, and was in any case present on the set…
Top Gun : Mavericknostalgia, but not too much
In Top Gun, there is the crew of “Maverick” (Tom Cruise) and “Goose” (Anthony Edwards), and that of “Iceman” (Val Kilmer) and “Slider” (Rick Rossovich). Two duos of aviators who compete in prowess to win the famous trophy “Top Gun”. The antagonism between them is fueled by their opposition in the air, as well as on the ground. And several scenes from Top Gun highlight “Slider”.
There is that of the first meeting with “Maverick” and “Goose” at the base bar, where he exchanges ironically – and vulgarly – with “Goose”. Also, an exchange with “Maverick” when the latter tries to win – successfully – a dinner with “Charlie” (Kelly McGillis). Thinking “Maverick” failed, “Slider” tells him he just crashed in flames. What the character embodied by Tom Cruise retorts: “Slider… you stink!A scene that directly precedes “Slider’s” moment of glory, which contracts its oiled musculature in the cult volleyball scene.
A great moment for actor Rick Rossovich, referred to as “Hangman” (Glen Powell) and “Rooster” (Miles Teller) during the American football game of Top Gun : Maverick.
“Slider” is not the only character of Top Gun to be absent from Top Gun : Maverick. Neither Carole Bradshaw (Meg Ryan), the mother of “Rooster”, nor “Charlie”, nor “Jester” (Michael Ironside) or even “Viper” (Tom Skerritt) are indeed present in the sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski. In fact, apart from the moving return of “Iceman”, Top Gun : Maverick leaves very little room for nostalgia, which contributes to the success of the film which leans towards the future and hardly turns towards the past. But if “Slider” is not back, Rick Rossovich has elements to explain it.
Rick Rossovich: “‘Slider’ became a pilot on commercial lines”
In the real world, the actor of Top GunofEmergency room and of Pacific Blue took his retirement from the screens in 2012after a last role in the film Sandbar. Regarding the return of his character in Top Gun : MaverickRick Rossovich had fun casting doubt on the 35th anniversary of Top Gunin 2021, at the microphone of Screenrant.
Who knows?… “Slider” could appear in the sequel. Maybe I do not know. Maybe it’s a secret. We’ll see.
At the same event, regarding fiction, he explained what happened to his character after the events of Top Gun.
He became a pilot on commercial lines, most of the time at the controls of a Boeing 747 on the LAX – Heathrow route. Then he switched to Dreamliners (Boeing 787, editor’s note). I think he had a good life, and he cherishes his memories.
No screen presence, but there during filming
Finally, retired in the city as on the screen, “Slider” does not return to Top Gun : Maverick. But it may have taken very little. In effect, he was present on the set, the day of the shooting of the funeral sequence of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. It was Joseph Kosinski who told it in an interview given to UPROXX:
There was a mini-meetingTop Gun”on set during the funeral. So yeah, Val Kilmer was there. Rick Rossovich was there. Tom Skerritt was there. Jerry Bruckheimer was there. So we had this mini OG reunion of”Top Gun”that day, off camera, and it was really cool.
As a reminder, Tom Skerritt embodies in the first film Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the commander of the base Top Gun, and who fought in Vietnam with the father of “Maverick”. If they were all there that day of filming, maybe it was for appear at the funeral of “Iceman”. And that plans were shot and ultimately not selected for editing…
