When will a sequel to “Top Gun : Maverick”? Impossible to say, but the idea is in everyone’s head and the director Joseph Kosinski had some enthusiastic words about it! But we will have to be patient, and take care of a crucial point to adjust…
A future movie Top Gun in question
The question is obviously on everyone’s lips. After its triumph at the world box office (to date it is close to the $1.5 billion revenue) the biggest hits in Tom Cruise’s career and in Paramount history, Top Gun : Maverick will there be a sequel ? The subject was very quickly raised, and as early as July Miles Teller (aka “Rooster” in the movie) touched on talks with Tom Cruise about a potential sequel, explaining that that decision would be up to the actor and producer anyway. Recently, the director of Top Gun : Maverick Joseph Kosinski, on the occasion of the Los Angeles Culture Festival (LA3C), was asked about a potential sequel. His answer, without being decisive, is inspiring.
Joseph Kosinski believes in it
At this point, Paramount and the film crews are still enjoying the success, and it doesn’t seem like a priority to follow up on it immediately. If a new movie Top Gun must see the light of day, it will be a priori again with Tom Cruise, an inseparable figure of the franchise. But his other franchise Impossible mission is today its main objective, with the release in July 2023 of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 and a year later Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 2. Not to mention that it must also fly into space for the project led by Universal, NASA and SpaceX… We must therefore take our time and, as Joseph Kosinski suggests, wait to find the good story.
Is there another story attractive enough to keep coming back to? It seems to me that at the end of “Top Gun : Maverick” Maverick still has some under the pedal. He’s not going to stop there.
Nothing official then, but the affirmation all the same that Tom Cruise shouldn’t put away his pilot suitto rather continue its momentum.
Two stress points
Since this second film was called Top Gun : Maverick, it might be appealing to dwell on another character for a new film. With such a success for “Maverick”, the public is there to discover a Top Gun :Roasteror even a Top Gun : Phoenix. Indeed, if it is Miles Teller and Glen Powell who are the most visible young drivers in Top Gun : Maverick, Monica Barbaro was ideally noticed there, and making her a main character would be a brilliant idea. There are potentially a lot of stories to tell. Nothing therefore stands in the way of the imminent start of a sequel, except for two points.

The first is not insurmountable, but it takes a long time. With a demanding production for the cast and the technical teams, it takes months of preparation, training, as well as tests of all kinds, before even starting to shoot. The second point is more complex, and concerns licensing rights Top Gun.
Indeed, Paramount is currently on trial with the heirs of journalist Ehud Yonay, whose article Top Guns published in 1983 is the source of the screenplay for the 1986 film. Paramount had obtained the rights to the story for 35 years and returned them, as provided for in the assignment contract, the January 24, 2020. A date on which the Yonay family believes that Top Gun : Maverick was not finished. And that it should not therefore have been released without a renewal of the transfer of rights… In short, legally speaking, Paramount is no longer able to launch a production today. Top Gununtil an arrangement with Yonay’s heirs is found…
