“Top Gun 2: Maverick” keeps us film editors on our toes. For weeks, one record message about the Tom Cruise mega hit has been chasing the next. Just two days ago we reported that the flying action had a better VoD premiere in the US than any film before! But that’s not all. Despite the home cinema start, the high flight continues unhindered in the cinema. With domestic grossing of $701 million, “Top Gun 2″ has now reached the top 5 of the most successful films of all time in the USA.

“Maverick” ousted the $700 million MCU hit “Black Panther” in sixth place. Occupy the seats before “Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens” (937 million), “Avengers: Endgame’ (858 million), ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (811 million) and ‘Avatar – Heading for Pandora” (761 million) in that order.
“Top Gun 2” are still missing a whopping 60 million to also “Avatar“ to overtake. However, we don’t believe that the military actioner will penetrate the spheres of the sci-fi blockbuster. With total box office earnings of 701 million, 60 million doesn’t sound like much. But the leap from 641 to 701 million (the last 60 million) took almost six weeks.

Now if you consider that every week fewer people for “Top Gun: Maverick“ will go to the cinema and the VoD release will certainly reinforce this negative development, then the action hit still has an extremely difficult long-distance flight ahead of it. Also comes “Avatar“ in cinemas again on September 23 and will probably screw up its box office results to heights that even Tom Cruise in a jet plane cannot achieve.
It will be similarly tight for the approach to the global top 10. Currently occupied “Top Gun: Maverick” with a global box office result of 1.442 billion dollars already has a strong 12th place. The high-flyer will surely rush past “Die Eiskönigin 2” (1.450 billion). But in the end it won’t quite be enough to displace “Fast & Furious 7” (1.515 billion) from rank 10.
