In Germany, mega perennials “Top Gun 2: Maverick” achieved something this weekend that the rest of the world has long achieved: the Marvel hit “Doctor Strange To beat in The Multiverse Of Madness and overtake in the 2022 annual cinema charts. Once again, around 130,000 people bought a cinema ticket for the sequel to the plane with superstar Tom Cruise.
With around 2.3 million cinema tickets sold is “Top Gun 2” is now the second most successful film in German cinemas in 2022. The fact that only the second place and not the top position as in the majority of Europe and America is recorded has to do with the German enthusiasm for “Harry Potter” to do. In Germany, “Fantastic Beasts 3: Dumbledore’s Secrets” is still at the top with over 2.9 million visitors.
The charts for this weekend read “Top Gun: Maverick“ in an outstanding third place given the long running time since the end of May 2022. Two other sequels are ahead: “Jurassic World 3: A New Age” is wafer-thin (135,000 tickets) in second place and at the top is “Minions 2”. According to the estimates, the 450,000 tickets sold are clearly enough for the top, but are a bit of a disappointment. Predecessor “Minions” attracted more than twice as many people to German cinemas on the opening weekend. On the other hand, the result of the animated sequel in the USA is not a disappointment.
There are still no figures for the entire weekend from North America, because today, Monday, July 4th, is a public holiday and there will traditionally only be an accounting for the entire 4-day weekend. But even now, it’s safe to say that Minions 2 is a huge hit there. After three days, $108.5 million had already been grossed in North American cinemas alone. Projections assume that the sum will increase to approximately 128 million dollars with today’s Monday.
Definitely it will be well above the sum of 115.9 million dollars. played so much”Transformers 3” in 2011 on the so-called Independence Day weekend, breaking the previous record set by “Spider-Man 2” ($115.8 million) by a mere razor. so So Minions 2 grabs the record for the best start to a long Independence Day weekend.
The future will show whether “Minions 2” will be the next billion hit with this US start in the footsteps of its predecessor or whether weaker starts like in Germany will prevent this. The first part, “Minions”, grossed over a billion dollars in 2015, making it one of the 25 highest-grossing films of all time.
Incidentally, in 2022 only one film has so far managed to bring in more than one billion dollars. Of course we’re talking about “Top Gun: Maverick’, the highest-grossing film of the year to date. It’s now at $1.1 billion in gross revenue and overtook works as diverse as “Star Wars 9”, “Joker’, ‘The Dark Knights Rises’ and ‘Jurassic Park’. “Top Gun: Maverick’ is now in the top 30 in this leaderboard.
