Launched in September 2013, the streaming platform devoted exclusively to Japanese animation, has a number of anime. We could talk about the most obvious and popular such as “Naruto”, “Bleach”, “Hunter x Hunter”, “Death Note” or even “One Piece”. But there are many others, sometimes less known, but just as talented.
Adaptation of the eponymous manga by Atsushi Ōkubo (Soul Eater), the anime draws us into a humanity plagued by the phenomenon of human combustion. Indeed, overnight, a person can ignite and become a real “human torch”. Faced with this disaster, special fire brigades called “Fire Force” are set up to eradicate the “human torches” which threaten the population. The work mainly follows the 8th brigade in which is the young Shinra Kusakabe. Nicknamed “the demon” (because of his frightening smile, even in the most tragic situations), he wishes to become a hero, and at any cost. Produced by David Production, (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) the series is striking with its steampunk universe and its almost sketched graphics. With rhythmic, dantesque and legible fights, Fire force is a pure shonen of the genre.
While the fifth season (named The Fifth Plate) is currently broadcast on ADN, Food Wars is one of the most popular anime around. The series tells the story of Sôma Yukihira who dreams of becoming a chef in the family restaurant and thus surpassing the culinary talents of his father. For this, he joined an elite culinary school where only 10% of students are graduates. Within this school, he will try to achieve his goal in the face of teenagers just as gifted as him. Although the character design as well as their personalities are the archetypes of those of the shonen, Food Wars is visually very beautiful. Culinary confrontations are like real physical confrontations. Admittedly, it may seem surreal at first, but the graphic beauty of the whole makes it easy to skip the pill.
While Kohei Horikoshi’s eponymous manga is in the top 3 best-selling manga in Japan, can we consider him as the shonen heir to Naruto or others One piece ? Since its animated adaptation in 2016, it seems to be off to a good start anyway. My Hero Academia takes place in a world where 3/4 of the population has superpowers. Thus, those who possess this supernatural power can protect the population and become heroes … or even criminals. The series follows Izuku Midoriya “Deku” who is unlucky enough to be born without power but who wants to be a superhero. Thus, he joined the Academy of Heroes in order to become the greatest hero there is. Although the scenario is very simplistic, MHA strikes by the charisma of its characters, the quality of its direction and the beauty of its soundtrack. Anime to watch urgently!
Produced by Production IG, (Ghost in The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Kuroko’s Basket) Psycho-Pass takes place in a futuristic Japan where it is possible to quantify the mental stability of an individual. This aims to anticipate and apprehend future criminals. Thus, each citizen has a device on his body called “Psycho-Pass”. If the “crime coefficient” becomes too high for some, it is then that Unit 1 of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Public Security Bureau (BSP) comes into play. This unit is made up in particular of Inspectors and of Executors. The latter are responsible for locking up or killing potential criminals. Become an important franchise in Japan since 2012, Psycho-Pass remember Ghost in The Shell by its dark atmosphere, its cyberpunk style and its dystopian universe.
There was already an animated adaptation of Natsuki Takaya’s cult manga. Released in 2001, the series only partially covered his original work. This “anime remake” therefore proposes to cover the entire manga. Fruits Basket tells the story of Tohru, a young teenager who has just lost her mother. Always jovial despite the hardships, the 16-year-old high school student lives alone in a tent until the day she meets members of the Soma clan: Shigure, Yuki and Kyô. Without knowing it, Tohru settled on their property. Distraught to see the “accommodation” of the young girl, they offer to stay with them in exchange for household chores. Tohru accepts and then begins to live with this strange family who have a mysterious secret.
Indeed, the members of this family are suffering from a curse which turns them into one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac. This happens when they are sick, debilitated, or someone in the …
