A few weeks ago, Wolfgang Petersen, one of the most successful German filmmakers of all time, died in his adopted home of Los Angeles. With the stroke of genius “Das Boot” he went down in the eternal annals in this country. Cinema connoisseurs in the US naturally also enjoyed the brilliant underwater World War II drama. Nevertheless, the East Frisian burned himself into the general public’s memory mainly as a reliable supplier of big Hollywood blockbusters.
Beginning with “In The Line Of Fire” through “Outbreak” and “The Tempest” to “Troy” and finally “Poseidon”, Petersen realized an impressive series of screen spectacles, each of which flushed the studios hundreds of millions of dollars in the coffers. One of his biggest hits was the star-studded one “Air Force One“ from 1997.
The action hit made a big impression in North America. The US head of state, played by superstar Harrison Ford, was even the subject of late-night talk shows there for many weeks. Jokes have been made about how the character would have handled the many crises during the tenure of her real-life counterpart, Bill Clinton. Moderator David Letterman, for example, only ever spoke of “ass-kicking president from ‘Air Force One'”.

From his point of view, the American President James Marshall (Harrison Ford) succeeded in striking a blow against international terrorism. After all, his people managed to depose the Kazakh dictator General Radek (Jürgen Prochnow) and put him under arrest. But of course the matter is far from over. Because the general’s remaining henchmen are planning a liberation campaign.
The brutal Ivan Korshunov (Gary Oldman) and his henchmen seize the US President’s plane, Air Force One, with Marshall on board. That’s how they want to free Radek. However, the guys didn’t count on Marshall’s resistance. Since he would have to abandon his family and employees, he not only refrained from leaving the plane using the emergency escape device. He even takes on the heavily armed villains in hand-to-hand combat…
