Okay, the film only cost a modest $26 million. But with a US box office of 12 and worldwide grossing of just $30 million, “Self/Less – The stranger in me” still a real flop – after all, he should have just recouped his marketing costs and that would not even have covered a single dollar of the original production budget.
But whether a film convinces at the box office or fails usually has nothing to do with the quality – and you can catch up on it later in the home cinema or on TV. And that’s exactly what you should do with “Self/Less” – despite its obvious weaknesses.

Because the premise itself is pretty intriguing: Rich but terminally ill real estate tycoon Damian (Oscar winner Ben Kingsley) loses his consciousness and memories using a novel process called shedding into the body of young playboy Edward (Ryan Reynolds, “Deadpool 2”). But as nightmares and headaches begin to plague Damian in his new body, the billionaire realizes that something didn’t go as planned during the procedure…
Almost seven years later, the box office of “Self/Less” would certainly look very different today thanks to the additional star power of Ryan Reynolds (2016 “Deadpool”) – and the streaming services would be clamoring for this film, especially after the outstanding numbers from “Red Notice”.
Especially since the complex topic of immortality (at the expense of others) is very exciting, even if it’s only touched on superficially, like here. Instead of going any deeper, after a little super-soldier shoot, the action and the – as you would expect from “The Fall” mastermind Tarsem Singh – grandiose pictures soon dominate the events.
Nevertheless, there is a deep tragedy in the story of Damian and Edward – and even if in “Self/Less” it is a kind of Science fiction light there are more than enough interesting approaches to give the film a chance, at least on free TV.
“Self/Less” will be on ZDF Neo this Saturday evening (i.e. on August 11, 2022) at 8:15 p.m.
