A thriller with 90’s accents
Those who want me to die begins a bit like a puzzle, with three seemingly independent stories then which form only one. In the first, Hannah (Angelina Jolie) is a parachutist firefighter from Montana, a bit hothead, who remains haunted by a gigantic fire that devoured three children and a colleague before her eyes.
The second takes place in Florida. Two men, played by Nicholas Hoult and Aidan Gillen, ring the doorbell of a prosecutor’s home as part of an intervention for a gas leak. When they come out, the house is shattered. The broadcast of the drama on a news channel causes the hasty departure of a man (Jake Weber) and his son Connor (Finn Little).
He is the accountant of the deceased prosecutor and he immediately understands that this is a staging and that he is next on the list. All these little people will eventually meet when the accountant seeks refuge with his brother-in-law, a sheriff played by Jon Bernthal, who is also Hannah’s ex who has just had fun activating his parachute while standing in the back of a pickup truck launched at full speed and which was reprimanded by the ex-sheriff not happy to see her playing Russian roulette with her life.
You follow ? Because it gets complicated. The two killers shoot the accountant who sends, in his last breath, his son to find a trusted person to reveal to the general public the scabrous affair which is costing him his life. And that’s just the start of the movie.
The sequel is in several particularly brutal scenes with arbitrary executions, a few scenes of torture and an incredibly strong and dignified little boy as he witnessed his father’s assassination. And Angelina Jolie is somewhat of a superheroine with no superpowers but who endures more than any other human being can endure when faced with the most extreme adversity.
This thriller, which is carried out with full speed, is reminiscent in many ways of those of the 1990s with scenarios that push their heroes to their limits. Except that there, the indestructible hero who knows how to handle the ice ax, move straight towards a devastating fire without batting an eyelid and who heals his wounds with alcohol without flinching, it’s Angelina Jolie. What more ?
