That the theatrical release of “Top Gun: Maverick” and the Netflix start of “The Spider’s Head” were just three weeks apart, is due to the many postponements of the aviator action sequel due to the corona pandemic. This is how the very rare case arose that two films by one director started almost simultaneously. Both works were directed by Joseph Kosinski. And while they’re very different, they also have things in common — and by that we don’t just mean Miles Teller is part of the cast. No, director Koskinski smuggled a little Easter egg onto his previous feature film in The Spider’s Head.
Right at the beginning of the film we see a model airplane in the room of Jeff, played by Miles Teller. As director Kosinksi confirmed in an Easter Egg video for Netflix, this isn’t just any airplane model. If you look closely, you can see that it was exactly the F-18 that Rooster, also played by Miles Teller, played in “Top Gun: Maverick“ flies.
By the way, it’s not the onlyTop Gun“-Easter egg in the Netflix film. In another scene, the already mentioned Jeff uses the description “Ice Cold” for himself. This is a reference to an iconic statement in the original “Top Gun”-Movie. Here, Pilot Goose (Anthony Edwards) uses the term “Ice Cold” to describe fellow pilot Iceman (Val Kilmer).
It is no coincidence that Miles Teller, of all people, puts the words into his mouth as Jeff. Because the Goose mentioned is the father of his “Top Gun: Maverick-character Rooster. As Koskinki revealed, he doesn’t deserve any credit for this Easter egg. That goes back to the two screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
By the way, you can get more “Easter Eggs” in “Der Spinnenkopf” and above all background information on the design and the look of the film in the following video.
While “Spiderhead” is available to stream on Netflix, “Top Gun: Maverick’ continues in the cinemas – and that’s damn successful. Not only is it the most successful film in Tom Cruise’s entire career, which has not been short of hits, it has already grossed over a billion dollars. In order to is “Top Gun: MaverickThe most successful film of 2022 so far.
