In a video chat with Denis Villeneuve, James Cameron provided his thoughts on Dune, comparing it to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Marvel movies.
For its Directors on Directors segment, Variety brought together two great science fiction directors: Denis Villeneuve and James Cameron. During their conversation, the latter compared the latest work of the first, Dune, to another monument of cinema, the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson.
“What strikes me about Dune is that it’s really epic. When I use the word ‘epic’ I am using it in a very specific way, i.e. like a David Lean movie, or to a very large extent like the Lord of the Rings movies.“, assures the one who recently gave news of the next Avatar.
On the other hand, another universe which could seem epic to many spectators provokes less sensations to James Cameron since he admits: “But when I think of movies that contain epic events, like a Marvel Universe movie where entire cities are destroyed, I don’t find them epic.“
Exchange of compliments
And to confide in Denis Villeneuve: “You seem to have the discipline, the vocabulary of making really epic movies, with those kind of grand shots that are just presented and take their time with the music and so on.“
For his part, the one who will shoot Dune 2 next year is ecstatic about the work of James Cameron on Avatar, in particular on a specific point. “There are similarities between Dune and Avatar but I had this bible (Frank Herbert’s book, editor’s note), you created this world from nothing“, he admits.
As a reminder, the adventures of Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet) will continue on October 18, 2023 on the big screen and those of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), on December 14, 2022.
