Did you know that in “Star Wars“ Once upon a time there was an alien race called the Rakata that ruled for 10,000 years, enslaving nearly the entire galaxy? Namely with the help of a self for “Star Wars“Relationships of highly developed technology whose energy was fed from the dark side of the force? If not, then you haven’t played the Knights Of The Old Republic video game or this highly interesting chapter of theStar Wars”-History long forgotten. After all, the video game masterpiece from 2003 is now almost 20 years old. the Disney+series “Andor” has now mentioned the Rakata and thus confirmed more clearly than ever that their former galactic reign of terror also belongs to the Disney canon.
During a scene at the beginning of Episode 4, Luthen (Stellan Skarsgard) gives Cassian (Diego Luna) a pendant containing a kyber crystal, one of the gems from which lightsabers and the Death Star draw their deadly energy. That in itself could already be called an Easter egg, but it isStar Wars“Fans, of course, old hat. Much more interesting is what Luthen says about it: “Blue kyber. sky stone. the old world To celebrate the uprising against the Rakata invaders.”

So “Andor” here mentions the long-forgotten alien species that lived about 36,000 (!) years before the events of the “Star Wars’ movies came to power and only went down 25,200 years before the Battle of Yavin, i.e. before the destruction of the first Death Star.
But how was it possible for the Rakata to rule for so long? Their empire, also known as the Infinite Empire, lasted 10,000 years, while Emperor Palpatine’s reign lasted a measly 23 years. What made the Rakata so special was that they were technologically vastly superior to the entire rest of the galaxy, and the species was also exceptionally Force sensitive.
On the one hand, they developed a precursor to the hyperdrive, which made it possible to conquer most of the known galaxy in the first place. On the other hand, the entire people surrendered to the dark side of power and even managed to develop technologies that were even amplified using their destructive power.
Also legendary was the so-called star forge, a huge artefact floating in space that the Rakata had built by the peoples they enslaved around 30,000 VSY. This was able to use the dark side of the Force to siphon the energy of the stars and use it to create anything the Rakata desired, including entire fleets of warships, battle droids, and other weapons.
The fact that the Infinite Empire fell in the first place can be attributed to the fact that the dark side of the force eventually corrupted the Rakata to the point that they fought among themselves. In addition, a devastating plague broke out that killed billions of them. The Rakata perished, dwindling in numbers, and declining over the millennia to such an extent that they were in the “Star Wars-present only exist as primitive tribes in distant corners of the galaxy.
At least that’s the story behind the two Knights Of The Old Republic games. To what extent all of these details also took place in the Disney canon is not yet known. At least since “Star Wars: Rebels” confirms that the Infinite Empire also existed in the official timeline. Because its symbol appeared in an episode of the animated series.
However, “Andor” now even calls the Rakata by name and mentions a rebellion against the former rulers of the galaxy. So the Kyber Crystal Luthen is giving Cassian is believed to be at least 25,000 years old, if not much older.
While “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy bluntly announced ahead of the series that there would be no fan service, he was just referring to the kind of references that seem forced and unnatural. But when the opportunity arises to organically incorporate an Easter egg into the series, it is used very well.
In the antiques shop in Luthen you can find all sorts of iconic “Star Wars“ objectsincluding Starkiller’s Sith Stalker armor from The Force Unleashed video game, Jedi Master Plo Koon’s breathing mask, Mandalorian armor, and Jedi and Sith holocrones.
