A newcomer arrives in the second season of The Witcher, to be discovered on Netflix since Friday, December 17. Human with a monstrous appearance, Nivellen indeed made his debut in the series, with a major make-up job to restore the bestial appearance of the character. It is indeed the Norwegian actor Kristofer Hivju, revealed for his role of Tormund in the HBO series, who plays Nivellen in The witcher. The shooting will not have been easy, since the latter contracted the Covid in March 2020, forcing production to stop for a few days. Fortunately, Isabelle Nanty’s cousin did not have any consequences from the infection.
Nivellen’s appearance required the design of a prosthesis made from human, yak and goat hair affixed to the face, but also the arms and hands, as well as the torso of Kristofer Hivju. Visual effects designed by teams from ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) were also necessary for the final rendering of the character.
Nivellen appeared in the short story A touch of madness, taken from the collection The Last Wish written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The book, as well as the other volumes of the Witcher saga, are available from the publisher Bragelonne. Note that the character has not appeared in any of the video game adaptations of the franchise.
