After a few fleeting shots unveiled in a short teaser, A24 has unveiled the official trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s “The Whale.” We discover a moving Charlie, played by Brendan Fraser and whose performance as an actor promises to be major.
Brendan Fraser in all his states
It’s a promise made since its warm reception at the Venice Film Festival 2022, and we can logically start to find the time long. Scheduled in French theaters on March 8, 2023, The Whale of Darren Aronofsky indeed signs the return of Brendan Fraser in a major role, and until then we had barely been able to see it. This time, the new images make it possible to see, to hear, to discover this character suffering from morbid obesity and who seeks to reconnect with her teenage daughter, Ellie, played by Sadie Sink.

Charlie, alone and surrounded
There is no misery or voyeurism in this trailer, which shows Charlie practicing his profession – he is an English teacher -, shows him with his nurse Liz (Hong Chau), as well as with his daughter Ellie. He hasn’t seen her since he was eight years old, so today he is a teenager with whom he must reconnect. We also understand that his extreme weight gain is due to depression following the loss of a loved one.
From what we perceive, there will be lightness in The Whale. Charlie is smart, he’s got a sense of humor, he’s basically very friendly. But he is also in great pain, and the last words he utters in this trailer are heartbreaking… On a subject where it would be too easy to bring out the violins and the big clogs, there is good hope that Darren Aronofsky and Brendan Fraser have avoided this trap and deliver a touching and deeply humanist film.
