In 2009 François Descraques launches on Youtube the web series The visitor from the future. First simple sketches shot with a minimum of resources but carried by a catchy and hilarious concept. Coming from the future, a mysterious man challenges the young Raph and tries to convince him not to do something trivial like throwing a can. Why ? “Because if not, this is what will happen!“. After this replica which will become the catchphrase of the Visitor, the latter describes all the disastrous consequences that will flow from a small act.
Over the episodes, The visitor from the future grew, developing a whole universe (with the Temporal Squad trying to stop the Visitor), and saw the audience responding. Four seasons were then produced between 2009 and 2014 with ever more resources made available to François Descraques and his team.
An ambitious project by François Descraques
After also novels and mangas, The visitor from the future is now also a movie. But don’t panic, you don’t need to have seen the whole series to find your way around. This was François Descraques’ first objective, to make a feature film accessible to as many people as possible. The second objective was to not to make a “web movie”, but a real work of cinema.
For this, it benefited from a large budget compared to the web-series, but quite modest for a science fiction film of this ambition. Between 4 and 5 million euros, which corresponds more to a classic French comedy. The director was still able to go to the end of his idea, cleverly using his experience on the web-series.
