Part of the cult French comedies, “Les Sous-doués” marked the public for its totally crazy humor, as well as its famous song “On a un grand poil dans la main”. The production of the film did not look for very long the interpreter of the piece, because the latter is also in the cast.
The Under-Gifted : a classic of franchouillarde comedy
Released in 1980, the commercial success of The Under-Gifted literally resuscitated Claude Zidi’s career. Indeed, after having been one of the kings of French comedy during the 1970s (Les Bidasses en folie, The Wing or the Thigh, La Zizanie…), the director finds himself on the straw following the failure of Dumb, but disciplined in 1979. In order to be able to continue paying his taxes, he decided to stage a low-budget comedy called The Under-gifted. The feature film attracts 4 million spectators, and allows a sequence called The Under-gifted on vacation. Note that, a few months after the comedy released in April 1980, Claude Zidi released another equally popular film: Inspector Burr, with Coluche.
The Under-Gifted follows the students of the Lycée Louis XIV, reputed to be the worst high school there is with an abysmal failure rate for the baccalaureate. Known to be dunces and notorious slackers, these high school students will not have a choice this year: they have to get the baccalaureate at any cost.
First big success for Daniel Auteuil
Beginning his career in the mid-1970s, Daniel Auteuil truly rose to prominence in 1980 thanks to the film The Under-Gifted. Indeed, in the role of Bébel, the actor makes speak a hitherto unsuspected comic talent. The actor is also very involved, since in addition to playing the first role of the film, he is also the singer of the song We have a great deal of hair in our hands, which we hear at the end of the credits.
The actor will continue in the song since in 1985, he delivers a new song entitled May life forgive me. However, he quickly quit his vocation when he landed the lead role in Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources. The feature film will reveal him on the dramatic stage and allow him to win his first César in 1986.
