Discover the answers to the questions that we ask ourselves about “The Suicide Squad”, film adapted from DC Comics which leaves this Wednesday in the theaters.
Is this a sequel?
Technically yes, because actors from the first film are returning (see below), and for the same reason, this is not a complete reboot. The official position of the Warner is therefore that it is an incarnation of the Suicide Squad uncorrelated from any connected universe.
But rather than a “Suicide Squad universe”, we can speak of a “Harley Quinn universe”, since the three films in which she appears follow one another, from Suicide Squad which shows her relationship with the Joker to her emancipation in Birds of Prey and finally his appearance in The Suicide Squad.
That comes back ?
Margot Robbie puts on Harley Quinn’s costume again after Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey. Freed from the Joker, she now lives her life in complete independence, and will participate in a new mission for Amanda Waller (still played by Viola Davis). We also find in the cast Jai Courtney in Captain Boomerang and Joel Kinnaman in Rick Flag.
Who doesn’t come back?
Most of the Suicide Squad from the first film, starting with Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and Katana (Karen Fukuhara). The most noticeable absence is that of Will Smith, who played sniper Deadshot, and who disappears from this new version.
Already little present in the first film, the Joker is also absent from The Suicide Squad. SHis performance by Jared Leto had disappointed many fans and it’s no wonder he’s not back on this adventure, especially after Harley broke away from his influence.
Finally, the archaeologist June Moon played by Cara Delevingne returned to a normal life after being the supervillain Enchantress in the first film, she had no scriptwriting reason to be present.
What does it say?
Belle Reve is the prison with the highest death rate in the United States of America. Where the worst villains are held, who will do anything to get out – including joining the super secret and the super shady Task Force X. They must travel to the distant and enemy-crammed island of Corto Maltese, cross a jungle teeming with adversaries and guerrillas, on a “search and destroy” mission.
Why a change of director?
David Ayer had led the first adventure of the Suicide Squad by making the film he had in mind, but the Warner studio got scared. The original cut seemed far too dark to him, especially compared to the light tone of the Marvel films and their success with audiences. The box office disappointment caused by Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman certainly didn’t help.
Ayer was thus seen stealing the assembly of the film, recovered by a company specialized in the production of trailers. Entire scenes have been cut and narrative arcs have all but disappeared (notably that of the Joker).
Following these creative differences, David Ayer no longer wishes to work with Warner on a sequel and leaves to find Will Smith to shoot the surprising Bright.
So who does it?
After several prestigious names mentioned, it is James Gunn who is chosen to stage the adventures of these antiheroes. Known for his two Guardians of the Galaxy films for Marvel, the director moved to DC when Disney declared him persona non grata. Warner then rushed at the opportunity to offer him a movie of supervillains.
Since then, Disney has revised its position and James Gunn is already preparing a Christmas episode for Disney + around the Guardians of the Galaxy, but also the third installment of the adventures of Peter Quill and his gang and a series on Peacemaker, one of the new characters of this Suicide Squad.
