One more character could have perished in The Suicide Squad! James Gunn has indeed revealed that in a first version of the scenario, Ratcatcher 2 knew a fate very different from what was finally decided.
Many of The Suicide Squad’s villains didn’t make the film alive. But another name could have been added to the list if James Gunn had stuck with his first idea, which was to kill Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) at the end of the film. A conclusion, in which Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) was also in jeopardy, which the director ultimately deemed too dark.
During an interview with CinemaBlend, the filmmaker recounted this alternate ending: “By the very end of the film, Ratcatcher 2 had taken the information from Jotunheim. She had sneaked them up and ran away with all this information from Jotunheim, and the rest of the group didn’t know.” He pursues :
And (Amanda) Waller blew her head off, after they got back to jail! At this point, Harley tries to talk to Bloodsport … Bloodsport panics, because he is related to this person, like a girl.
“He panics, and Harley is actually quite nice, in a weird way, trying to get Bloodsport to give up. But Bloodsport ends up shooting Waller in the heart with a combustible bullet and threatens to detonate it.”, Recalls James Gunn.
Find the perfect ending
Then to explain: “It was a little complicated, but it was something like that. He wasn’t shooting her in the heart. He was shooting her just below with one of the explosive bullets, used by Peacemaker earlier in the film. And so now she has to do as he says.”
But this is not the end that the spectators were able to discover in the cinema. “It was just too dark for me. It was really too dark. It didn’t really work for me”, Confides the director before concluding:
It didn’t really tell the story I wanted to tell, which is much more focused on the different journeys of the characters, on an emotional level. And for me, really, the ending with Bloodsport stroking the rat … it was the perfect ending for the movie.
