Crowned with the success of “La Boum” and its sequel, Claude Pinoteau, Danièle Thompson and Sophie Marceau meet in 1988 for “L’Étudiante”. A sentimental comedy on which seemed to hover a romantic atmosphere during the shooting …
The student : You Call It Love
After the boxes of The party and its sequel, the Gaumont brings together the team of the two films to try to renew their success with The student. Claude Pinoteau is thus back to directing, but also to screenplay with Danièle Thompson. Sophie Marceau embodies the heroine with the overloaded schedule of this sentimental comedy.
Released in 1988, the feature film debuts in a ski resort. In a chairlift, Edouard (Vincent Lindon) finds himself with Valentine. For the young musician, it is love at first sight. On his return to Paris, the artist sees Valentine and tries to approach her in the metro. A first meeting follows where, despite the clumsiness, the chemistry between them is undeniable.
But the teacher who passes the aggregation and the rocker on tour quickly realize thatthey lead opposite lives. While she faces the pressure of a hard-prepared exam, she crisscrosses France with her group. Even if it means exhausting themselves and increasing the number of brief encounters, they will do everything to ensure that their nascent story does not fall apart.
Despite the attempt to perpetuate the spirit of The Boom, The Student does not achieve such a nice score at the box office. If it does not reach the 4.3 million admissions of the amorous discoveries of Vic Beretton, nor the 4 million The Boom 2, the film still brings together more than 1.5 million spectators in France.
Missed reunion and salty note
Four years ago The student, Claude Pinoteau turns The Seventh Target. This thriller marks his reunion with Lino Ventura after The Silent, The Slap and The angry man. A project to which owed initially participate Sophie Marceau. But when the shots start, the actress abandons the feature film to turn Love points, directed by his companion at the time Andrzej Zulawski. She is replaced at a moment’s notice by Elisabeth Bourgine, who finally lends her features to Lino Ventura’s daughter, and is harshly sanctioned by Gaumont.
Because of this last minute withdrawal, the actress has to pay a deduction of one million francs. An episode which however does not prevent him from collaborating a third time with the filmmaker, as well as the studio, for The student.
The confidences of Vincent Lindon
And the desire to reuse the recipe from The party is noticeable from the team back together. For this, it is obviously necessary to infuse a large dose of romanticism in the film, which is apparently not always feigned on the screen.
Passing through Europe 1 in 2017 while presenting Rodin at the Cannes Film Festival, Vincent Lindon looks back on his shoot with Sophie Marceau. Thomas Sotto then evokes the famous scene of the “cinema kiss” in the car and ask him how to kiss his partner. What the actor responds to, to the journalist’s surprise:
Very well. It’s not just cinema! We forget that the person who does it, did it that day, when I kissed him, yes, it’s cinema, but it’s still, me, Vincent who kisses, she, Sophie .
