An event is looming in the history of The Simpsons. Waylon Smithers will be entitled to a love story in an upcoming episode.
Finally, Waylon Smithers Jr. finds love in The Simpsons five years after coming out. In an upcoming episode entitled “Portrait of a lackey on fire”, the billionaire’s longtime assistant Mr. Burns is going to fall in love.
There will be sparks between Waylon (voiced in the original version by Harry Shearer) and his new lover Michael De Graaf, a famous fashion designer. Michael will be voiced by actor Victor Garber, best known for his role alongside Jennifer Garner in Alias. “Smithers finds true love with famous fashion designer, but will his new relationship destroy Springfield?” says the description of the episode.
The episode in question was written by longtime screenwriter Rob LaZebnik and his son, Johnny LaZebnik. “Quite often homosexual romances are a subplot or are just brought up or shown in some sort of montage or as a punchline.“Johnny LaZebnik recently told New York Post :
And what’s really got people excited about this episode is that we get to see – without giving too much away – the start, the middle, and who knows how a gay relationship ends. We really get to the heart of the matter, on how homosexuals date, how they meet, how it is.
Victor Garber, who has been married to artist Rainer Andreesen since 2015, said he was “critically important that these stories be recognized“.”I haven’t played a lot of gay characters but every time I do it reminds me of some feelings I had as a young actor where I couldn’t be gay“said Victor Garber, 72.
Smithers’ sexuality had long been talked about, but he did not officially reveal his homosexuality until season 27 in 2016. At the time, Waylon confessed his feelings to Mr. Burns but was rejected. Waylon Smithers then had a brief affair with a man named Julio.
