So it was mithril indeed: At the end of the second episode “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” something glimmered promisingly in a chest in Khazad-dûm, in episode 4 the mystery has now been revealed. These are chunks of a newly discovered ore that the dwarves found in the mountains of their homeland.
And Disa (Sophia Nomvete), Durin (Owain Arthur) and Durin’s father Durin III. (Peter Mullan) don’t make such a big secret of what they’re digging for in the old mine under the mirror lake for nothing: Because “The Lord of the Rings” fans already know that mithril is incredibly valuable from the films of Peter Jacksonwhere Frodo (Elijah Wood) even survives an attack by a cave troll thanks to a mithril mail shirt.
But that’s not all mithril is useful for in The Lord of the Rings stories – and we already see a first indication of this in episode 4, in which Elrond (Robert Aramayo) receives a chunk of the valuable metal from Durin. In order to guess more, you have to watch the trailer for Episode 5 afterwards.
In it it seems Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) holding the mithril chunk and saying, “Nothing diminishes its light”. So the elven smith has apparently found the perfect material for his secret projectwhich is why Elrond was sent to Khazad-dûm in the first place.
What kind of project this is has not yet been revealed in the series, but like in the books by JRR Tolkien, there can only be one answer. Maybe it’s not Celebrimbor’s plan at first, but anything He wants to create something powerful, and we know how that will develop: Celebrimbor forges the rings of power with the help of Sauron disguised as Annatar – the nine rings of men, the seven of dwarves and the three rings of elves.
And the latter are particularly important here. First, Celebrimbor forges them in the book template according to Sauron’s plans, but without his direct help, which is why they are not corrupted by him. And second will one of the three elven rings actually forged from mithril: Nenya, the ring of water, later worn by Galadriel (in the series: Morfydd Clark).

Nenya, the Ring of Mithril, in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Nenya has appeared in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. there Galadriel (here played by Cate Blanchett) wears it on his finger, for example when Frodo looks into Galadriel’s mirror in Lothlorien (They also talk about it in the Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring).
However, it will probably be a while before the forging of the rings is shown in “The Rings of Power”. Our guess is that this all-important event will not come until the Season 1 season finale. That would be a strong final bar, because with the forging of the rings Sauron also shows his true face and new disaster breaks out over Middle-earth…
Surely the mithril plays an important role before that. The Rings of Power Episode 5 will be released on September 23, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video. You can also learn more about Celebrimbor, Mithril and the rings in the video embedded above or in the following article:
