25 million homes around the world watched the first two episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in the first 24 hours of its release on Amazon Prime Video giving the streaming service the biggest premiere in its 15-year history. Amazon announced this itself on social media and in a press release – and that brings us to the heart of the problem:
Because even if the 25 million households worldwide sound a lot and certainly not for nothing the ten million US households that watched the “House Of The Dragon” premiere doubled: You can’t really do much with the Amazon figures.
Because so far, the streaming service has not really been able to look at the cards and therefore all previous call and viewer numbers for series on Prime Video come from third-party providers. So there is no suitable comparison to classify the record: How many more people around the world have watched The Rings of Power compared to, say, Season 3?The Boys“?

And also the comparison to “House Of The Dragon” isn’t really bearable, because here one compares U.S-Households with the roughly 200 million Prime Video subscriptions that make it worldwide are. However, global numbers are not readily available for the new “Game Of Thrones” series.
In addition, there is the problem that Netflix also had for a long time: When a new series or season started there, people were quick and happy to announce big record news, which, however, for a long time was based on the fact that only two minutes of a series or film had to be watched. Netflix is now more transparent here and publishes the hours watched worldwide and broken down by country on a weekly basis.
The Amazon record numbers for “The Rings of Power” have so far completely lacked this transparency: Did 25 million people watch the full two episodes of “The Rings of Power” or just get a taste of Episode 1 and then turn it off again? That would be a huge difference.
Like the US industry magazine The Hollywood Reporters writes, it will be a while before there are more detailed figures for “The Rings of Power”, namely possibly up to four weeks. And even then, these numbers will only come from a third party and will only apply to the US. However, you can then at least assess the success of “The Rings of Power” a little better.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 3 will be released on September 9, 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
