The world of Outlander is getting ready to expand on Starz. Premium cable channel and producer Sony Pictures TV is developing a prequel series for Outlander. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts will write and executive produce the project. The news came a little over a week before the Covid-delayed sixth season of the time-traveling series debuted on Starz.
Outlander has already been renewed for a seventh season. Starz and Sony have not made the official announcement for now. Details regarding the cast and story for the potential prequel are being kept secret. Diana Gabaldon, the author of the novels on which Outlander is based, wrote a 2013 novel called Virgins, which focused on younger versions of Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan in the Starz series) and Ian Murray (Steven Cree).
Gabaldon hinted that there will be another prequel in a Facebook post in early February. A possible expansion of the Outlander world, a big one, is no surprise. Outlander executive producer Ron Moore pointed out potential spin-offs from the main series in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s TV Top 5 podcast in February 2021.
“I’m very optimistic about this. I admit I’d be happy to see it happen sooner than that, but everything happens on time,” Moore said in a statement. he said and expressed his excitement. Roberts, who has a general agreement with Sony, will executive produce the prequel along with Moore and Tall Ship Productions partner Maril Davis.
