The actor and director of The Pale Blue Eye know each other well. They indeed collaborated together for the drama The Blazes of Wrath in 2013 and especially for the great western Hostiles in 2017. Their third collaboration therefore takes the form of a historical detective thriller. In it, Christian Bale stars as Augustus Landor, a veteran investigator tasked with solving a series of murders at West Point Academy. He is helped in this task by a young man who will later become a famous writer: Edgar Allan Poe (played by Harry Melling).
A tense and dark atmosphere
Scott Cooper knows perfectly how to stage and highlight his stories. This is immediately obvious in this short teaser of The Pale Blue Eye unveiled by Netflix. The dark atmosphere at will is thus largely put forward compared to the intrigue of the film. A plot that we guess however tense, violent and breathless.
Cold, snow, wet rocks… the sumptuous images of a winter in the state of New York in the 19th century are paradoxically a warm invitation to dive into an agonizing and mysterious investigation. The duo composed by Christian Bale and Harry Melling announces itself there bright. They are supported by a very solid cast made up in particular of Gillian Anderson, Robert Duvall, Timothy Spall and Lucy Boynton, as well as Charlotte Gainsbourg.
