Somehow the bad news for DC fans hasn’t stopped in the last few days and weeks: first the whole drama about “Batgirl”, which ended up in the bin almost completely shot, then the end for Bruce’s new “Batman” animated series Timm, Matt Reeves and JJ Abrams – and now the next theatrical release delay for “Aquaman 2”.
Originally “Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom” (the original title) will hit theaters in December 2022, but was then pushed back to March 2023. After the new postponement that has now been announced comes “Aquaman 2” is now in cinemas exactly one year later than originally planned – and five years after the first “Aquaman“: New US launch date is December 25, 2023.
A German start date has not yet been set. Since December 25, 2023 is a Monday (!), we don’t dare to predict on which day the DC sequel will start in Germany. According to the major US industry magazines, the reason for the postponement is that “Aquaman 2” needs even more time in post-production, so probably mainly for the visual effects.
Like well-connected insider Borys Kit from the Hollywood Reporter at Twitter writes, But financial problems at the studio also play a role. The newly founded concern Warner Bros. Discovery only has enough money for two (!) theatrical releases in 2022, according to Kit. After all, the marketing for big films often eats up just as much money as the shooting.
But at the same time it will also another DC film has been postponed and moved to the vacated start date of “Aquaman 2” on March 17, 2023: namely “Shazam 2: Fury Of The Gods. The German start date should then be March 16, 2023, currently it says “Aquaman 2”.
That’s also a shame for DC fans, but at second glance it might even be good news – because going through the shift”Shazam 2″ the start of “Avatar 2” out of the way on December 14, 2022. The DC sequel would have had a difficult time against the sequel to the most successful film of all time.
Now Warner starts with “Shazam 2” so in March, where you only start in 2022 with “The Batmanlanded a $770 million hit. And “Aquaman 2” can start in December like its predecessor, which grossed almost 1.15 billion dollars worldwide – mind you without “Avatar” competition, because “Avatar 3” will not start until December 2024.
According to the current status, DC fans can then look forward to a total of four films in 2023, namely “The Flash’ (June 2023) and ‘Blue Beetle’ (August 2023). However, the start date of “Black Adam’, which is still slated to hit theaters on October 20, 2022.
