[Mis à jour le 22 novembre 2021 à 20h47] Did you know that Out of Africa, which traces the incredible romance between the characters embodied by Meryl Streep and Roberd Redford, was inspired by a true story? The scenario of the multi-Oscar winner is indeed the adaptation of several works, but mainly that of “The African farm”, autobiographical novel written by the real Karen Blixen, signed “Isak Dinesen”. In this work, published in 1937, the Baroness looks back on the seventeen years she lived in Kenya, between 1913 and 1931.
In The African Farm, Karen Blixen describes her discovery of the African continent, Kenyan culture and its people, but also her passionate affair with the English aristocrat Denys Finch Hatton, transcribed in Out of Africa. The latter finally leaves her for a British aviator, before tragically dying in a plane crash in 1931. After her return from Africa, Karen Blixen distinguished herself as a woman of letters, writing Seven Gothic Tales and The Tales of winters under pseudonym. She became an illustrious figure in Danish artistic life thanks to her highly prized literary circle or her radio speeches. She died on September 7, 1962. The film by Sydney pollack comes out 23 years after his death.
