[Mis à jour le 22 novembre 2021 à 20h47] Did you know that Out of Africa, which traces the incredible romance between the characters embodied by Meryl Streep and Roberd Redford, was inspired by a true story? The scenario of the multi-Oscar winner is indeed the adaptation of several works, but mainly that of “The African farm”, autobiographical novel written by the real Karen Blixen, signed “Isak Dinesen”. In this work, published in 1937, the Baroness looks back on the seventeen years she lived in Kenya, between 1913 and 1931.

In The African Farm, Karen Blixen describes her discovery of the African continent, Kenyan culture and its people, but also her passionate affair with the English aristocrat Denys Finch Hatton, transcribed in Out of Africa. The latter finally leaves her for a British aviator, before tragically dying in a plane crash in 1931. After her return from Africa, Karen Blixen distinguished herself as a woman of letters, writing Seven Gothic Tales and The Tales of winters under pseudonym. She became an illustrious figure in Danish artistic life thanks to her highly prized literary circle or her radio speeches. She died on September 7, 1962. The film by Sydney pollack comes out 23 years after his death.

Out of Africa is an adaptation of an autobiographical novel by Isak Dinesen, the pseudonym of the real Karen Blixen. Directed by Sydney Pollack, the film was released in March 1986 in France, ie a few months after its initial release in the United States. Meryl Streep and Robert redford, actors already famous at the time, are admirable in their respective roles. Praised, Out of Africa has won numerous awards including seven Oscars and three Golden Globes in 1986.

Synopsis – In 1913, Karen (Meryl Streep), a wealthy Norwegian, entered into an arranged marriage with Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauerse). The young couple decide to settle in Kenya in order to set up a dairy farm. Bror buys a plantation of coffee trees, which does not interest him in the end. Fickle and keen on hunting, he gradually abandons Karen. Under the spell of Africa, the young woman dedicates her existence to the cultivation of coffee trees. It is a pioneer in this field. It was then that she befriended Denys (Robert Redford), an adventurer with whom she fell head over heels in love. Unfortunately, it will be difficult for him to hold back this freedom-loving man.
