Each year, the end-of-year holiday period is logically of paramount importance for the various video game companies, including console manufacturers. And despite an unusual international context and supply problems, the 2021 end-of-year celebrations were no exception. For Microsoft across the Channel, things went particularly well last month.
The Xbox Series X | S have just passed the million-copy mark in the UK. And they broke their own sales record in December. This information comes from the very serious Christopher Dring of the less serious name site GamesIndustry.
The journalist accustomed to figures adds that the Xbox Series came in second in the charts across the Channel in December (behind the Switch). According to him, this result was obtained thanks to an increase in sales of 108% compared to November.
Xbox Series X | S sold like never before
Surprisingly, Christopher Dring also specifies that December 2021 was the biggest month in Xbox Series X | S history in the UK. Thanks to the results obtained last month, Microsoft’s new consoles even managed to beat their launch week in November 2020.
While Microsoft made sure to put Xbox Series Xs on sale in December, this situation was clearly made possible by the presence of the Xbox Series S in the equation. Easier to produce in these times of shortage of components, the Xbox Series S was therefore very present on the shelves. Its availability as well as its aggressive selling price made the Xbox Series S an attractive proposition this Christmas.
A PS5 behind but popular in December
Finally, a word about the month of December 2021 of the PS5. Sony’s new console therefore ended the year in third place. But the news is still good for Sony. Indeed, PS5 sales increased by 25% between November and December 2021.
In December 2021, the PS5 also achieved its second best month in Boris Johnson’s territory. And it’s a safe bet that its sales have been dragged down by the now traditional supply problems. As a reminder, the PS5 passed the milestone of one million copies sold in August 2021.
