Marvel Studios is reportedly currently working on four completely unreleased new feature films, which will anchor in Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Obviously, the firm would look at a Thunderbolts film and another on Nova.
The ever-evolving MCU
Marvel Studios was still lucky with this COVID-19 pandemic. Indeed, the terrible epidemic, which notably led to the closure of cinemas, occurred right between two phases of the MCU. The Marvel Universe had just wrapped up Phase 3 of its MCU with Spider-Man: Far From Home. So the unwanted pause didn’t impact the flow of the MCU too much. After many postponements, Black widow ended up hitting theaters last summer, followed by Shang-Chi. The Eternals and Spider-Man: No Way Home will conclude this Marvel Studios film year.
Obviously, the firm does not intend to stop there. While it is diversifying in particular on Disney + with many TV series (Loki, Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision), cinematographic projects continue to multiply.
Fantastic Four and Shang-Chi
Even though the MCU’s release schedule has just been totally messed up, phase 4 seems to be restructuring. Marvel Studios has indeed added four new projects to this phase 4. According to The GWW, Marvel Studios to begin production of four new films in 2023. In this shortlist, there would obviously be the new version of Fantastic Four. Jon Watts, the director of the trilogy Spiderman with Tom Holland, was chosen to direct Fantastic Four, which should logically be a reboot to anchor the characters in the MCU.
Marvel would, still according to The GWW, announced the launch of Shang-Chi 2. At this time, it’s unclear whether Destin Cretton will return behind the camera. In any case, despite a fairly low box office score compared to usual MCU standards, of “only” $ 422 million in revenue, the company is capitalizing on a sequel to the film worn by Simu Liu.
The Thunderbolts and Nova
Another project put forward by the media: a movie about the Thunderbolts. This is hardly a surprise since the latest MCU products seem to be leaning towards the introduction of this little-known team to the general public. For simplicity, it’s a bit like the Suicide Squad Marvel version. This is a government team made up of villains or anti-heroes who seek some form of redemption. In the comics, characters like Deadpool, Rulk, Ghost Rider, The Master of Corvée or Crossbones were part of it. In the MCU, a team already seems to be taking shape.
Of course, this is only a hypothesis, but Countess Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, which appears in Falcon and the Winter Soldier and in the post-credits scene of Black widow, seems to be building a team. So far she has recruited Yelena (Florence Pugh) and US Agent (Wyatt Russell). The other members of the Thunderbolts could consist of the White Vision (Paul Bettany), the Abomination (Tim Roth), the Phantom (Hannah John-Kamen) or even Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
The last secret project would concern Nova. In the comics, the latter was born from the destruction of his planet, Xandar, by the terrible Annihilation. Basically, the Nova Corps is a group of protectors of the universe, like the Green Lanterns at DC Comics. Then, after the destruction of Xandar, only one Nova remains, Richard Rider, who recovers the consciousness and power of his people. In the MCU, Thanos destroyed Xandar to retrieve the Power Stone, which hints at Nova’s upcoming appearance …
Of course, all this should still be taken with a grain of salt (except for Fantastic Four which is well confirmed). One thing is certain though, The Eternals arrives on November 3 at the cinema:
