A family psychological thriller
The BBC’s first Finnish series, The Man in the Bedroom 301 is a dramatic thriller set over two periods, 2007 and 2019. And like any good, self-respecting flashback series, the first will affect the events of the second. . In 2007, the Kurtii family got together to celebrate summer in their house in the middle of the woods.
It is in this forest that young Tommi is shot. Responsibility for the murder lies with Elias Leppo, a brooding, acne-prone preteen living nearby who commits petty shoplifting and has an ominous fascination with knives and guns. He is condemned and sent to a rehabilitation center.
12 years later, the Kurtti, still traumatized by Tommi’s death, organize a family vacation in Greece. But shortly before they leave, the boy’s father and grandfather, who know what really happened in 2007, receive a letter threatening Tommi’s sisters as well as his 12-year-old cousin.
The grandfather will then be convinced that “Leo”, the man in room 301, is in reality Ellias. Over the course of the episodes and thanks to the many flashbacks, the viewer gradually learns the truth about the unfolding of this fateful day.
Written in English by Kate Ashfield, who previously worked on Born to Kill and who we saw on screen in Shaun of the Dead, The Man from Room 301, which has an all-Finnish cast is a drama at the sustained pace that takes us into the most shameful secrets of this seemingly banal family.
With its many twists and turns, this thriller promises to captivate us throughout the 6 episodes that this season contains.
