The cast of the live adaptation of the Knights of the Zodiac is getting clearer! Sean Bean, Famke Janssen and Mark Dacascos were notably announced to the cast. We take stock.
Last March, Famke Janssen sold the wick. A live adaptation of the Knights of the Zodiac was going to see the light of day. “We were supposed to shoot last year, but due to the pandemic the shoot has already been postponed twice. So we hope it will be for this year. Fingers crossed.”, she confided, questioned by Forbes.
It is now confirmed with the casting of the film announced by The Hollywood Reporter. After the disastrous Dragon Ball Evolution, Hollywood is therefore tackling another monument of pop culture. Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque, a cult anime popularized in France by Club Dorothée, recently had a reboot with the Netflix animated series. Very disappointing, it did not live up to the expectations of the fans.
Will the distribution of this live adaptation reassure them? According to THR, Sean Bean, Mark Dacascos, Nick Stahl, Diego Tinoco, Mackenyu and Madison Iseman will be Knights of the Zodiac heroes on the big screen. Of course, Famke Janssen, ex Jean Gray in X-Men, is also confirmed. Note that Mackenyu, propelled star of the feature film, is the son of the late actor Sonny Chiba, who died last August.
Sean Bean will play a character named Alman Kiddo, Seiya’s mentor, played by the Japanese Mackenyu (Pacific Rim Uprising). The story will be an origin story, with Kiddo taking the hero under his wing in the Order of Knights. Seiya will therefore embark on an epic to recover the armor of Pegasus, accompanied by a young woman, Sienna (Madison Iseman), who struggles to control her divine powers. When in Diego Tinoco, he will camp a mysterious assassin hired to eliminate the reincarnation of the Goddess Athena.
The film will be directed by the Polish Tomasz Baginski, producer of the series The Witcher on Netflix. The fights will be choreographed by martial arts expert Andy Cheng, who comes to officiate in Shang Chi. As for the script, it is signed Will Geiger, Blazej Dzikowski and Eugene Son. The latter notably wrote the screenplay for the 2018 Saint Seiya series (broadcast on Netflix), which had caused much ink to flow. Josh Campbell and Matt Stuecken (10 Cloverfield Lane) also participated in the writing. No release date has yet been communicated. Will this new adaptation of Masami Kurumada’s manga be up to the task? The debate is open.
