After winning two prizes at the last Gérardmer fantastic film festival, “The Innocents” arrives in French cinemas this February 9. And it’s a real shock!
The Innocents: what is it about?
Presented in the official selection at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in the Un certain regard section, The Innocents by Norwegian director Eskil Vogt arrives in French cinemas this February 9. In the meantime, he won the Grand Prix at the L’étrange festival, as well as the critic’s and audience’s prize at the last Gérardmer festival.
This is a fantastic fable, on the edge of horror, taking place in a city in Norway in the middle of summer. It is in this decor made of HLM buildings at the edge of the forest that four young children discover mysterious supernatural powers. Together they will test their limits, far from the gaze of adults. Innocent games will gradually turn into cruel recreation.
Visceral and hypnotic
Filmed at the height of children, The Innocents summons fantasy elements to address the mechanics of childhood, including the search for boundaries at the age of all experiments. The world of childhood is made up of moments of intense joy, but also of great cruelty.
Eskil Vogt shines the spotlight on this tipping point between the desire to push the limits, and the moral barrier of good and evil that every child possesses. The supernatural powers of the young protagonists make it possible to multiply this subject with immense force.
At a time when Marvel blockbusters are kings, the theme of superpowers approached through the prism of childhood is exciting. We are of course thinking of Chronicles Josh Trank released in 2012 but he was interested in adolescence.
The film is made up of particularly striking cruel scenes rarely seen in cinema, but also sequences of great emotion. The four young actors impressed with their spontaneity and the strength of their looks.
The Innocents is already establishing itself as one of the big cinematic shocks of the year 2022.
